S7-392 issues connecting to monitor via HDMI

I've just bought an Asipire S7-392 to replace a Toshiba Portege.  I also have a Samsung SA350 external monitor.  I never had had any problems connecting the Toshiba to the monitor (via VGA) but I cannot get the S7 to connect to the monitor via HDMI.  I initially thought it was the HDMI cable but my partners Mac laptop connects straight away to the monitor using the same cable.  Has anyone any idea what the problem is? Thanks in advance.

I am having exactly the same issue.I have an HDMI to DVI connector to a ACER S230HL 23 inch monitor and it asys no signal no matter what I do in display properties. I am doing this because the mini display port -> VGA (1920x1280) on this monitor is not clear, ok for pictures but text is not sharp. Don't think just because VGA, almost like dsplay scaling needs turning off. I am going to try on other monitor, could be possibe 1980x1280 is not possible on this monitor, but a newish LCD monitor.

Anyone have any answser to why HDMI is not driving second monitir and why the claity on the display port is not sharp.

When using the HDMI -> DVI   I think the monitor was being asked to display a resolution it wasn't capable of displaying. I just bought a new DELL full HD monitor 23" S2340Lc and using HDMI-HDMI I get 1920x1080 in digital
