My screen keeps going blank for a few seconds. Then it comes back with a message that "My display adapter failed to respond and has recovered". My display driver is up to date. I'm running Windows 7 Professional.

    What unit do you have?

I have an Acer Aspire M5810. Product Key is X***********. My Display Driver is NVIDIA GT 220 version 306.97. I am running Windows 7 Professional - 64 bit. The message I get after the screen goes black and then returns is "Display Driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Version 306.97 stopped responding and has successfully recovered." This blackout followed by this message occurs about once every 3 or 4 minutes. NVIDIA doesn't seem to have any advice.

I've read that using the 32 bit version of the display driver might solve the problem. I'm wondering if I should try that.

It sounds like a problem with that driver, possibly a corrupted download. Have you tried doing a system restore to before this started to see if it runs correctly? Also, just curious, I see on the Acer support site that this unit came with Windows 7 Home Premium, did you upgrade it to Professional?

Yes, I upgraded to Windows 7 Professional. The problem started some time after that, though. I have re-downloaded the latest 64-bit driver several times. That hasn't helped.

I wonder if one can install a 32-bit driver on a 64-bit system without screwing something up.

One more observation: This problem occurs when using Internet Explorer or Chrome.

I had the same problem, I tried several drivers 32 bit and 64 bit older en the latest. Nothing works, the screen still freezes for a minute then came the same message sometimes 10 times on a evening. I replaced the video card with a ATI video card and all works fine since then.
