You can back up a lot of things on a usb hard drive if it can hold it it only takes knowing how much room you need

There's plenty of space, but the eRecovery program directs me either to back up to the internal hard drive, or to burn a CD/DWD disk.  It does not give me the choice ob backing up to an external hard drive.  I suppose I could copy the back up from the internal hard drive to the external hard drive, but I wonder if that would work if I ever had to restore the OS.

I have an acer extensa 5230 w/winVista and have never had a problem making a user backup to an external HDD. First plug in the drive, note the drive letter assigned then start the eRecovery program select 'create user backup copy', in the top window that shows a drive click the small arrow at the right and select the drive you want to use. if this is the first time using this drive you only get to choose a full backup, if not you can choose incremental to only save the changes made since the last backup(faster) or a full backup.
