Ultrabook Acer M5-481TG Making Noise

Hi

I just purchased an ULTRABOOK ACER M5-481TG-6814 RT last month and it is still under warranty.  My Acer is making an annoying buzzing noise from the very beginning.  The noise goes away if I physically tilt the laptop 45 degrees but obviously it is not usable at that point.  The noise reappears when it is placed on a flat surface and I suspect that the noise is from the hard drive.  Can someone tell me how I can get an Acer representative to confirm whether or not this is normal?  Thanks in advance.

Al

    Hi,

I bought an Acer Aspire Timeline U M5-481TG-6814 Ultrabook on November 21, 2012 and have the SAME EXACT issue. I sent the laptop in for repair immediately and have heard from Acer today that the repair they've made consists of a change in the BIOS. I have not received my laptop back, yet, but I am pretty sure that the issue is physical and not software-related. To save everyone time and money, can Acer look into it before they send my laptop back? I am pretty sure that if the problem persists (and it will) when I get the laptop back, I'll send it back again and ask for a definitive repair or a full refund.

    Thank you

    Update.

I sent my laptop in for repair to Acer. I just got it back today - December 20, 2012 (yes, it took a whole month to have the machine back) - and the noise not only remains but is possibly louder. Acer said they could not hear the noise, which is hard to believe since it is definitely audible. As a consequence, I am returning the laptop for a replacement or refund.

Conclusion: Acer does not have good or even acceptable customer service.

    Good day

May I kindly suggest that you do a bios update to the latest update, it might make a difference.

A BIOS/DMI update was done by Acer when I sent the laptop in for repair.

Obviously, it did not solve the problem.

The issue is clearly physical: hardware-, and not software-related.

I did return it. But what a frustrating experience! If Acer had fixed the problem during the two weeks they had it in repair, I wouldn't have had to return the item. Also, these posts are not good publicity for Acer. I don't know what they're thinking.

    Good day Nennena

This is an Acer Forum. Its better for a company to have a forum for users to discuss issues publicly and worldwide. Forums are there to share problems and solutions. This is one step that companies fear to do....do have a public forum, worldwide. This is a good reflection for Acer as it proves in my eyes that they have nothing to hide! We are here to share problems and solutions and not necessarily complaints. You will notice that we dont entertain compaints, but we entertain product fault descriptions and solutions.

    Regards,

    Freeza

    Freeza,

No need to get all aggressive.

But thanks to your attitude, I will not be buying Acer again.

    UPDATE:

I returned the laptop, and since a refund was not possible, I got a replacement laptop (same kind) that makes no noise whatsoever and works great.

I would have saved a lot of time had Acer fixed the first laptop and not ignored the problem, but in the end it was better to get a fully functioning machine right out of the box this second time around.

    Hi All-

I sent it back twice.  Each time it took 3 weeks to get it back.  The first time Acer replaced the HD but that did not solve the problem.  I sent it back a second time and they replaced the fan.  That solved it.  The second time I sent my laptop back to the factory, they gave me a postage free USPS shipping label.  They did not do that for the first time.  Hope this all  helps but glad i got it fixed.  It is so much quieter.

    Thanks.

I also have the buzzing noise, which seems to be getting worse...very annoying and loud enough now to make the device a nuisance for anyone sitting nearby. The Ultrabook was quiet at first, but after taking it on a trip (protected in a padded travel case) it developed the noise. Unfortunately, sending it somewhere for repair or replacement is not a good option for me: a) I need it 24x7 for a home business, can't be without a computer for weeks or even days, b) I had Windows 8 replaced by 7 and much software transfer work done by a third party, about $750 worth. I am assuming a replacement would need the same customizing. Mine was purchased from Best Buy. Are they authorized to replace the fan or upgrade the BIOS?

my acer is also making a lot of noise but the noise stops once i hit it "non too gently" where the fan is, but still doesn't stop. It increases and decreases of its own accord and its been going on for about 3 days. My warranty for this laptop is over so how can i solve this issue at home and not taking it to a repair shop as i have no means to do that.

I have a possibly similar thing with a new Acer Aspire V5-122P-0864. At random but sometimes frequent intervals there are fairly loud clicking/chirping sounds from the hard drive -- sometimes singly, but often 2 or 3 or 4 in close succession. These show as big jumps in disc activity on system graphs I've seen in task manager or sysconfig or somewhere around there in the nests and layers of obscure (to me) info. These noises occur when I'm doing little or nothing with the system, and techies at the Microsoft Store have told me they're abnormal and may cause or presage disc failure. How do I proceed to get Acer techies to advise or help? Some of the posts here are kind of discouraging.

My wife bought an Acer Aspire M5 about a year ago. It has been making horrible grinding noises for a little while.  I narrowed it down to the fan. I thought that perhaps something had become jammed in the fan area, so I openned it up to clean it out and discovered that the fan is defective. On the top side of the fan it rubs agains the housing and is slowly melting and ripping the plastic fan blades apart.... I am pretty dissapointed.
