Works like a charm.

Pros

Gets rid of and removes Acer bloat: Apps,Acer Ring, Acer depended Firmware, Acer app and system conflict. Graphic and Sleep issues.

Faster

Sound is amazingly louder (No Joke)

More HDD space

No Over heating ( that back upper right when charging and using at the same time or watching videos on full charge where it gets really warm ) has literally vanished

Battery life actually retains power long running 2 days and currently haven't docked or plugged in and currently at 48%

Cons

NONE!

So does it mean that it is safe to upgrade now? I've been confused by all the reports in here. My first attempt didn't work at all, but since then Acer sent me a new bios (which I think is the one that is now on the pager)

The problems I had was that lot of apps simply started working and others wouldn't open. So should I try again? I have the 32 Gb version btw.

i have done a clean installation of win 8.1 pro in my device and now my device runs perfect with 13gb free space. when i checked my disk partitions, its showing 2 recovery partitions (400mb and 300mb) + 100mb EFI partition other than normal c-drive partition. why is it showing 2 recovery partitions, anyone have any idea? (my device is 32gb)

ok keep this point while installation... after installation of win 8.1, wifi won't work, so download driver version 2.12 into a usb and install it (now u'r wifi will start working), after that don't restart device, but install latest windows update except the display driver update (because the latest display driver have crashing issue) and again don't restart, now do a windows trouble shooting. after that do restart your device....

BTW the correct driver set for 8.1 in a W510 is 3.00 Gto to support.acer.com. This may work but if not you will have to navigate the support.acer.com page.

How exactly do you do a full install?

I start by booting from other media then repartitioning and formatting the disk. For tablet testing I generally use external 80 GB SSDs, one reason I expect my next tab to have USB 3.0.

Hmm Wouldn't mind a step by step explanation if it is not too much trouble. You get the 8.1 on a usb stick or something?  I upgraded through the store and it works out ok, but the things mentioned byt the original poster (Heat on the upper right side) and the low volume is still there.

    i've done like this:

1- make a windows 8.1 bootable usb and in bios keep boot from usb as primary option (enter to bios by pressing both power and volume down key together while switching on the device untill bios is shown).

download acer driver v2.12 into another usb.

2- now switch on the device connecting the bootable usb (also connect keyboard if you have one). keep this in mind- after installation of windows, no drivers will work including touch (only usb mouse will work). so using a usb hub connect the bootable usb and a mouse to the device.

3- now do installation (as usual method we do win 7 installation in a pc).

4- after win 8.1 installation system gets restart.

5- now install acer driver version 2.12 from usb and don't restart (all your drivers will work from now onwards). if you want you can install the latest driver v3 but i didn't because driver v3 is causing display driver crashing for me and so im fedup with that.

6- now search for any windows update is available, if available install all those update (don't install display driver update) and again don't restart.

7- now do a windows troubleshooting (you can select from control panel).

8- after that do restart your device.

    all the best Smiley Happy

I have a USB Velocity VMDrive model 101 DVD burner that works well if you do not need BluRay and supports an external power supply so usually install from an .iso on a DVD. If you must install from a flash drive or SD card that can be done also (I have just for POP) and are several threads on how.

For Windows 8.1 upgrade on both the W510 and W3 that were working well on 8.0, I went to the Windows Store and upgraded from there, the W3 with the standard version and the W510 with 8 Pro and media center.

Both took several hours to go through the entire process though should be faster now. Download is about 2.7GB so takes a while even with a big pipe.

After that I went through a normal Windows update process. I did NOT install any Acer driver packages and both are working fine after the upgrade.

I had earlier turned off Fast Boot and most of the sleep functions. The display does turn off after 30 minutes if am ignoring it (on a KVM). neither has an Acer keyboard or dock so do not know about those. I do use either powered hubs or docks for USB.

Am hoping that the W4 will have GPS and be able to support USB 3.0 but other than that am not having any issues with either of the older tabs (true, what I consider a minor glitch might be more problematic to some).

for making bootable usb you search this in google- UEFI Bootable USB Flash Drive

also as u have keyboard, dock your device to keyboard during installation. and connect the bootable usb to tablet via the given micro-usb connector and connect mouse to keyboard (mouse is essential because trackpad won't work after windows 8.1 installation until the drivers are installed)

I did google but found the answer that it is  not possible to perform on 32-bit devices.

    (1. is the internal drive, 2: is evident, 3. is a flash drive, and 4. is anSD card. Shot of W510, W3 same).
