I'll guess and say you're talking about metro apps... I also had a similar problem, I think I resolved it by first installing the windows update (there was several) and after restart I was able to update the apps.

But the windows store sometimes struggles and doesn't update or hangs. I don't know why, you just have to restart the update process and hope that this time it will succeed... Smiley Wink

I also experienced problems today with the store being unable to process updates and downloads.
I finnaly fixes it by using this nice tool from Microsoft :
    http://download.microsoft.com/download/F/2/4/F24D0C03-4181-4E5B-A23B-5C3A6B5974E3/apps.diagcab
Just Run it, it should say if it found something to fix, reboot and voilà !
At least it worked for me Smiley Wink

Last thing you can do, go to the parameters (charms bar then "parameters" then "modify pc parameters") , choose "user" on the left, and on the right "switch to a local account" (don't worry you'll be able to revert back to a Microsoft account), log off and log in, then go to the windows store and it should ask for a Microsoft account. Log in to your account and try to update and download. In any case, you can go back to the parameters and switch back to a Microsoft account instead of a local one Smiley Wink
Hope it soldes your problem otherwise I'm running out of possible solution (there is still the reset windows possibility but I hope we won't have to come to that Smiley Wink )

have tested this with wifi and with USB connection to my phone using phone as a hotspot with USB connection (not wifi)... still seems to have issues though it says it installed one update....

Seems to be a windows 8 / windows store issue...

    Anyone have any ideas though?
