Dolby Home Theater v4 - Strange Issue

I'm on an Acer Aspire V5-573G running Win8

My issue is that Dolby Home Theater seems to randomly deactivate itself. It does not stop working stricktly, but rather seems to stop recognizing or processing any audio output. It's still running, and I can turn it on and off, but doing so has no effect on the audio.

This is especially disappointing since the system actually works quite well, improving sound quite a bit, othewise I might just ignore the problem. I see no way to actually turn it off to restart it, being unable to find any indication of it in the task manager, and so far the only solution I've found is to restart the computer.

The issue seems to usually pop up if the computer is put on hibernation mode, sometimes when put on sleep mode, and occationally out of the blue of just frrom locking the computer. I believe it once started working properly when I launched Civilization V, but I've been unable to replicate that.

Help of any kind very much appreciated.

    @Timbo

    That is pretty much the issue I have, only after I turn it on again it doesn't affect the sound output in any way.

    Update: After some fiddling around, I have discovered that poking around the sound options seems to affect Dolby Home Theater. Plugging in my USB microphone, setting it as default audio device, then switching back to the normal one seems to temporarily fix the issue, as does disabling the built-in microphone on the computer.

    The program will even then stop functioning spontaneously, seemingly based on where audio is coming from. If I play an mp3 file, fix the issue with the aforementioned trick, then pause the song and play a youtube video, the equalizer will die again.

    This problem is getting quite frustrating. Any help appreciated.
