W3-810 not charging and orange blink power button

Hi all.  Just got a Acer W3-810, but I have run into and out-of-the-box issued.  When I first set it up, I plugged it in to charge for a while.  Later, I started it up and did the initial setup (all still plugged in).  The next morning when I went to unplug and use it moving around, as soon as I unplugged it, the W3 went dark and would not turn back on.

I plugged it back in, and turned it on, and it came back up (booted from cold start).  Thinking maybe I didn't have it all the way plugged in the previous night, I set it aside to charge for a few hours.  Returning.. same behavior, as soon as I unplug the W3, it shuts off or will not come back on until I plug it back in.

I noticed that when it was plugged in I was getting an orange (amber) flashing light.  I couldn't find anywhere in the documentation that mentioned orange.

I just pulled up the mobility control panel (desktop->settings->control panel->frequent mobile settings) and it says that I have 100% battery and it is charging.

Wondering if I missed something, or if I have a defective unit.  Thoughts?

Chris

I'd contact Acer support but that sounds like the battery is either open or not connected properly. If so it will need to be repaired or replaced.

Odd, a blinking power LED is not mentioned in either the setup guide or the user manual. I imagine it means a fault. Is there any pattern to the blinks or is it just constand on-off ?

If the light is blue then it thinks it is charged. When you push the on/off does the blue light go off then begin blinking. If not I'd try wiggling the switch because it sounds like that is where the problem lies. If it does begin blinking I'd wait up to ten minutes for it to stop. If not then I'd turn off then use the vol down/power button to see if I could enter the BIOS Setup.

Mechanical issues like a switch often heal magically if cycled a few times.

Mine doesn't do this which is why I need those questions answered. Have you tried contacting Acer, the SNID is on a tiny label on the middle of the bottom of the case.

I had the same issue, but found if you unplug the dc adapter, and plug it back in, it charges again....and no blinking light.  I just got this and like it but finding you get what you pay for.... but I couldn't pass it up at $269 at staples.

Same here quite disapointed with it since it does not charge Smiley Sad

I called acer and was told to shut it down then put a paper clip in the reset hole by the sd card slot

for 15 seconds then plug it back in and power on.

once windows loaded it said battery 100% and charging

but that did not last left for couple of hours then un plauged the w3 and instantly the screen went black!!

anyone had any success with this problem apart from just returning it??

im in Africa so returning is not an option for a couple of months Smiley Sad

Do you know what the BIOS verion is that was not working ? If you go into the BIOS setup (power/vol dwn) one of the system information lines shoud be "System BIOS Version". Mine has neer been a problem and is v1.04.

If someone who is having the problem could give theirs maybe we can narrow down the issue.

    Hi guys,

I actually had this issue and wrestled with the unit a bit before everything started working right. I wish I recorded what I did in detail and unfortunately this will all come from memory sorry. So please don't take this for the holy word regarding this issue - just trying to help.

I think what worked in the end was a hardware reset - putting a paper clip into that little hardware reset hole beside the SD card slot, while I had the W3 plugged into the wall.

Plug the W3 to your wall first, you should see the blinking amber orange light, then you get a little ticked/annoyed :-), then press the power switch, wait until you are at the first prompt wanting some input from you. Do the hardware reset. Press the button until the hardware...wait for it... resets (you should see the screen go blank and acer splash screen comes up. If the amber light becomes steady, you are good to go. Leave the unit plugged in until the light becomes blue and a few hours more - I did overnight - I think it is possible that the battery detection is 'inaccurate'. After the over night jaunt, drain the battery of the W3 until it is 10% and re-charge it again. Do this three times. That should make the batter detection thing calibrate itself correctly.

    Hope this helps guys,

    Mon

    Hi guys,

Had the same issue with a brand new tablet that I brought yesterday. After unboxing at the store, the guy at the store wanted to give a demo and kept fiddling with the charger and DC connector until it finally powered up and Windows came up. Promptly after that the tablet was powered off and packed, I did not realize the issue until I brought he tablet back home and started seeing the blinking orange indicator. Left it overnight and had the same issue... ocassonally it would power up when the power button was pressed, but the Battery icon in Windows showed 'plugged in and not charging'.

The bios version was 1.5 and I reflashed it to 1.7 from the downloads in Acer website. After rebooting, the indicator is now a steady orange and the battery icon shows up as 'plugged in and charging'. Although the charging is quite slow... it took about 40 minutes to charge to the first 5%...it is working now !

    Hi All:

I faced this problem about 3 times already.

On all occasion, I left the w3 810 charging for 24 hours and it worked fine after.

The battery seems to take a long time to charge as compared to the hours of usage you get.

    Hope this helps someone.

I had my Acer powered up with AC and it appears as though Acer's update automatically fixed my problem with the battery. It is working fine now.  Smiley Very Happy

Bit late to the party here ...  I got one of these yesterday - last one in stock, no charger - running Windows 8 no updates.

Got myself a suitable charger and had the dreaded - and undocumented - flashing amber light on the power button. First I thought the charger was only supplying enough power to get the thing to turn on.  After forum surfing I saw this thread and it seems it was a fairly common issue, so had I bought a dud?

Undaunted, I fired up the Acer auto-updater.  The only thing on the list was a Bios update.  Installing that turned my flashing amber light to a steady amber - during the update (or rather after) it installs a battery utility as well (which I havent't look at at all)

I now have a fully charged tablet.  I have since updated to windows 8.1 a long with umpty-zillion patches that are an obligatory requirement for anything windows. Maybe it's just luck that this worked for me.
