I've tried to restore my Iconia w510 with external DVD and this cable http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-2-0-to-IDE-SATA-5-25-S-ATA-2-5-3-5-480Mb-s-data-Interface-Adapter-Cable-GE-/121170571357?pt=US_USB_Cables_Hubs_Adapters&hash=item1c3654305d

The external dvd is powered from my PC desktop and I have tried 3 external dvds and none of them gets recognized. I press F12 every time on boot but all I see is windows and not my external DVD, please help me someone?

I've tried both SATA and IDE, no luck!

What OS are you trying to boot ? The W510 BIOS only recognises boot disks signed by either Acer or Microsoft (essentially only Windows 8, 8.1, or Windows to Go). If you want to boot something else (not recommended because other OSs do not have the thermal management drivers) you have to turn the UEFI off in the BIOS (many many threads).

This is a shot of my W510 with different boot options.

I am using the system DVD provided for me when I bought the tablet! It's system DVD and recovery discs

The problem is that my drive is not recognized, I am using this cable http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-2-0-to-IDE-SATA-5-25-S-ATA-2-5-3-5-480Mb-s-data-Interface-Adapter-Cable-GE-/121170571357?pt=US_USB_Cables_Hubs_Adapters&hash=item1c3654305d hooked to my desktop PC drive via SATA (and tried IDE) but when I press F12 there is no drive to choose from, the dvd drive is not recognized!

With everything hooked and ready to go, can you open the tray on the DVD drive? Does it spin up when you put the disc in? Does it's activity LED light turn on while the disc spins?

Yes the dvd drive is working. I am using my desktop PC to power the drive so there is no problem there. The DVD spins and everything but the tablet does not recognize the dvd-player

Then it sounds like the cable is bad... Either the adapter or the cable that goes between the adapter and the drive. I'd guess the latter is the same cable that normally connects to the motherboard, which isn't a good sign for the adapter. :-(

Finally I've restored it using this method http://community.acer.com/t5/Tablets/How-to-SUCCESSFULLY-restore-a-W510-from-a-flash-drive/td-p/27701/jump-to/first-unread-message

But my language pack was not installed (swedish) how do I install it?

Oh now I understand, you were using an atapi (ide) drive and that has been a known bug since Windows 7 (doesn't happen with a true USB drive).

If you care, try this, use regedit to go to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" (may need to add the last key) and add: EnumDevice1 with a dword value of 1.

I have had many machines install Win8 from an DVD drive that promptly disappears. That probably won't help booting but should after Windows loads. OTOH I would never use one PC to power a drive for anotherPC.

I have one of these that has its own power supply but do not know if it will work with an internal DVD drive, never tried.

Do you have the C:\OEM folder still? The Office install image should be there.
