Ran Linux for 5 years...will try a SSD now. Think the HDD replacement is failing!

Says LVM not good.

Hope it works?

If you get the LVM error, which stands for Logical Volume Manager., have a look HERE for a solution how you can fix this error and/or what it means, as an LVM is the mechanism that provides an alternative method of managing storage systems on your HDD is failing and the drive has an error.

Be aware that your 2011 Aspire 5742 uses a SATA 2 type 2.5" HDD connection, but you can use a SATA 3 type drive also, as these SATA drives are backward compatible. Note, that you can also upgrade its DVD drive with a 2.5" HDD caddy to add another drive for extra storage. A 2.5" SSD SATA II or III drive should work perfectly with this laptop, I'm using an old 2.5" 500GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD with Win-10 Pro on my Aspire 5750 for 10 years without any problems, which is a very similar spec laptop to yours, so HDD do fail and its essential that as soon as you get any operational failures, you change the HDD for a nw one. Good luck and hope this helps you out further.

This is the Aspire 5742 storage specs of your laptop.
