Considering Aspire 5 AG15-51P-51XY — concerns about fan noise & performance

Hello,

I'm considering buying the Acer Aspire 5 with Intel i5-12450H, 16 GB RAM, and 512 GB SSD, and I need your advice.

I don’t have much technical knowledge about laptops. About two weeks ago, I was planning to buy this Aspire 5 mainly for video watching and general everyday use. However, I ended up purchasing the ACER AG15-51P-51XY with an Intel Core i5-1334U, 16GB RAM, and 512GB SSD instead, because I read that it had a better screen – and screen quality is my top priority.

After using the AG15 for a week, I’ve been quite disappointed with the display, speaker quality, and even the CPU performance. Even opening just 8-10 Chrome tabs is enough to trigger loud fan noise, and playing 2K videos instantly pushes the fans to max speed. The fans are noisy even when the system is idle, which is quite distracting. Because of this and the fact that the Aspire 5 offers a better CPU and more port options, I’m thinking of returning the AG15 and getting the Aspire 5 instead.

Based on my research, the Aspire 5’s screen is inferior in terms of brightness and colors compared to the AG15. But that’s no longer an issue for me since I’ll mostly be using the laptop with an external monitor. As for speakers, it seems both models have similarly below-average audio quality, so there’s no big difference there.

My main concern now is about the fan noise and thermal performance of the Aspire 5. I don't play games or run CPU-heavy tasks. I mainly use my laptop to watch series and YouTube videos in high resolution, read articles online, and browse the web with lots of tabs open. I also download files via trrent in the background from time to time.

So, my question is:

Would the Aspire 5 handle these everyday tasks without excessive fan noise and heating? Or will I run into the same problems again?

Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    Hi ThomazsG,

Thanks for laying out your experience so clearly—it's frustrating when a laptop doesn’t meet expectations, especially around noise and display. Based on your use case and feedback, switching to the Aspire 5 sounds like the right move.

While the AG15 has its strengths on paper, the Aspire 5 with the Intel i5-12450H should perform better in real-world multitasking, thanks to its higher performance cores and improved thermal design. Given your planned use with an external monitor, you're sidestepping the only real drawback—its slightly dimmer screen.

    Also worth noting:

    • 🌀 The Aspire 5 typically has more relaxed fan curves at idle and during video playback, especially under updated BIOS settings.
    • 🔌 You’ll benefit from a better range of ports, which improves overall usability and external display flexibility.
    • ⚙️ For your typical workload—browsing, streaming, downloading—you’ll likely enjoy a quieter, cooler experience overall.

Returning the AG15 while it’s still within the refund window is a smart call. No need to hang onto hardware that feels distracting in daily use. Let us know if you want help fine-tuning the Aspire 5 once it arrives—adjusting power settings or fan modes can really elevate the experience.

    Good luck.

If you want an efficient Acer Aspire model laptop for multitasking and video (note that audio in these laptops are all the same) as for best and like Hi-Fi audio you should use a noise cancelling excellent headphone like the Sennheiser Momentum 4 or similar good Hi-Fi headphones and don't rely on any laptop speakers to give you Hi-Fi quality sound, as they are all tinny😁.

If you want an Aspire laptop like that, I suggest that you look at one of the following Acer Aspire released in August 2024 the Aspire 15 range of these models, the A15-51P / A15-51PT / A15-51M / A15-51MT, with the higher end i7-13620H or even the i9-13900H cpu's and with the either 16GB LPDDR5-4800MT/s or 32GB LPDDR5-5200MT/s speed onboard memory. And it comes with a 15.6" Full HD (1920 x 1080) 16:9 ComfyView (Matte) 60 Hz and have a gen 4 x4 lane 1TB M.2 SSD drive and they are a much better choice than the Aspire AG15-51P. have a look at these laptops. Good luck.
