My laptop is only 4 months old and the battery went down to critical level on the screen and will not charge. The laptop will not even boot up. With the power cable connected I get the amber light and when I hit the power button to turn it on and the amber lite stays on then the blue light comes on for a few seconds and turs off. The only thing on the screen is the critical battery level then it shuts down after about 10 seconds. I checked the power cord and it has power at the connector. I hit the battery reset on the back of the laptop and still will not charge. I have tried to turn it on numerous times and always the same, will not charge.

Any suggestions?

Hi @wayne7409 — if you’ve already updated to BIOS version 1.18 (dated 2025/02/14) for your Aspire A317-55P and the issue persists, here’s a checklist of safe steps you can try before considering anything internal:

🧰 Post-BIOS Update Troubleshooting (No Disassembly Required):

    • 🔍 Check Installed BIOS Version Open Device Manager → Firmware → System Firmware → Properties → Details tab. Look for “BIOS Version” to confirm it matches 1.18.
    • 🔄 Soft Hardware Reset Unplug the charger and hold the power button for 30 seconds. This can flush residual power and reset some embedded controller states.
    • 🔋 Battery Drain Cycle (if removable)
      • Disconnect charger
      • Remove battery
      • Wait 10 minutes
      • Reinsert battery and power on
    • ⚙️ Load BIOS Defaults Manually On boot, press F2 to enter BIOS setup. Then press F9 (Load Defaults) and F10 (Save & Exit).

🛡️ Warranty Reminder: Avoid opening the laptop or attempting internal resets like CMOS pin shorting unless Acer Support explicitly authorizes it. Disassembly may void your warranty.

The no charge and no boot in a dead laptop is mainly due to either an old battery, a locked battery or a faulty power and/or charging rail or a dead EC chip or chipset that restricts all of those functions that you are having problems with. In 95% of cases you will not be able to fix these problems with a reset and you will need to take your laptop to a technician to pinpoint these problems and fix your laptop.

Doing a reset or a hard reset and CMOS reset, only works in laptops that actually boot but without a screen image, as its usually a frozen EC, Chipset or bios chips and those resets unfreezes these chips and fixes the laptop to boot properly.

Have look HERE at this guide and an example like you are experiencing, as this technician is an expert at fixing these faults and also fixing a no charge and even a faulty battery, as he has all the tools and allot of experience. Good luck and hope this helps you out further on what action you should take.
