W510 GPS

My W510 GPS is active and finds my location (correct Lat/Lon) but the Bing Maps has its diamond about 5 miles north. How do I tell maps to use the GPS ? Alternatively is there another maps program that will use the GPS ?

    Hi padgett,

Teh W510 comes with AGPS (Assisted GPS). This means you need to be connected to the internet for it to work. Otherwise you will need a hadrware dedicated GPS (USB) receiver to be able to use.

    Thanks

Yes, I understand and have several USB GPS units (BU, Delorme) that work well on other devices. The drivers installed on the W510 NP and I can use the GPSinfo utility to verify my current position but have not figured out how to make the included Bing Maps use it. The displayed map is good and vell detailed but shows my position as about 5 miles north.

Is there a way to configure Bing Maps to use my GPS or do I need a different program ? YWTK.

    Hi,

Bing maps will not allow you to use own GPS, you will need to be connected to the internet to use. You will need another program so you can configure your GPS receiver to make it work.

    Thanks

Too bad. I have loaded Delorme Street Atlas and after a few issues with the BU-353 GPS eveything is now working. Now the problem is making the EasyCap drivers co-exist.

Any progress on the problem with the recovery disks ?

    Thats good to hear.

I am still looking into it.  Have you tried to disable secure-boot also is the ODD showing up in the BIOS when connected?

Secure boot is disabled in the BIOS but the CD only shows up if it has a Windows 8 distro disk. The Secure Boot erase entries are in Security but there are no options to select. It is as if disabling secure boot has no effect, it is still looking for the signature Windos XP 3rd distro is not recognised.

Of the three recovery disks, only the "System" disk will try to boot but just stops on the Acer splash screen.

I would really like to restore to a clean image but have found a workarounf for the GPS issue so now it is just a matter of getting the composite video input to work. Unfortunately Camera only recognises the ones on the device and I am having some issues with the video grabber software.

I do believe this is a real game changer and the day of Android & iOS for anything beyond a smart phone is over.

I do not think the W510 has a GPS receiver at all, the software is using some sort of Internet echo (aGPS or eGPS) to make a guesstimate. It had me about 5 miles north of reality.

Would love to be rong, please let me know.

The purpose of Bing maps is to just provide a map. If you want a Sat-Nav you wil need (W510 and W3) a seperate GPS receiver and software (Streets and Trips, Street Atlas) that is both self contained (does not need an Internet connection) and can use the receiver.

I am not sure why but the PL2303 diver for the Globalstat devices does not work properly with Windows 8 and the first series BU-353. The nasty part is that when you buy a bundle - software and receiver - it is liable to have the early -353, what you need is a BU-353-S4 with the new chipset..

It is interesting, plug an early -353 in and you get a code 10 driver failure. Plug in the -S4 with the same driver and it works.

Or you can get a Microsoft/Garmin (ublox 5) receiver and  and do the same. Personally I like the -S4 better for automotive since it has a cord, suction cup, and magnet.

BTW the utility GPSInfo (inside the WIN distro on http://www.usglobalsat.com/ ) is very handy for finding out if a connected receiver works.
