My PC does not respond to the command to shut down or sleep.

What could be the cause, and what must I do?

If Windows is still responding run these two comands as Administrator: Dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth and press Enter, this can take up to 30 minutes to complete, just wait. The next command is the System File Checker: SFC /scannow and press Enter, this either ends with "Found corrupted files that were repaired" or "….did not find any integrity violations" repeat the SFC command till you see the latter. If the system does not respond force a shutdown by keeping the Power Button pressed down >5 seconds and reboot, then run the 2 commands above.

Maybe I am not doing something right. I tried leaving spaces in between, then I tried closing the spaces.

Sorry for the earlier response. I got the command, and it is in process. I will update after getting the result. Thank you, sir.

If your PC isn't responding to shutdown or sleep commands, try a forced shutdown by pressing and holding the power button for 10-30 seconds. If that doesn't work, unplug the power cord and remove the battery (if it's a laptop) and let it sit for a few minutes before restarting. You can also try disabling Fast Startup in your power options or checking for updated drivers and BIOS.

Here's a more detailed breakdown of potential solutions:
    1. Force Shutdown:
Press and hold the power button: This is the most immediate way to shut down a computer that's unresponsive. Hold the button for 10-30 seconds until the computer powers off.
Unplug the power cord: If holding the power button doesn't work, unplug the computer from the power outlet.
Remove the battery (if applicable): If it's a laptop, remove the battery to ensure a complete power cycle.
    2. Check Power Settings:
    Disable Fast Startup:
Fast Startup can sometimes interfere with shutdown or sleep. Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power button does > Change settings that are currently unavailable. Then, uncheck "Turn on fast startup (recommended)".
    Adjust Sleep and Wake Timers:
In Power Options, you can adjust sleep and wake timer settings to ensure they aren't preventing shutdown or sleep.
    Check for BIOS/UEFI settings:
Some BIOS/UEFI settings, like hibernation or hybrid sleep, can affect shutdown and sleep functionality. Consult your motherboard manual for optimal settings.

    3. Troubleshoot Other Issues:
    Update Drivers and BIOS:
Outdated drivers or BIOS can cause issues with shutdown and sleep. Check your computer manufacturer's website for updates.
    Run Windows Troubleshooter:
Windows has a built-in troubleshooter for power-related issues.
    Check for Unresponsive Applications:
Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) to see if any applications are using high CPU or memory and are possibly preventing shutdown.

    Run System File Checker:
Open Command Prompt as administrator and type sfc /scannow to scan and repair corrupted system files.
    4. Advanced Troubleshooting:
    Clean Boot:
Performing a clean boot can help identify if a third-party application is interfering with shutdown.
    Reinstall Windows:
If all else fails, a clean installation of Windows can resolve persistent issues.

I tried all that, but the issue remains the same. After giving it the command, the display turns off, leaving the keyboard lights on and the processors working as well. When that happens, I will have to long-press the power button to shut it down. That is routine. I checked the drivers, power settings, hibernation, and fast startup settings, both on and off. I tried all. Could this be a hardware failure? I was told there are many out there with such problems. I use Acer Predator Helios 300.
