I have recently purchased an Acer Veriton VX6680 with Processor: i5-11500, BIOS R01-A1 and chipset Q570. I need help with a couple of things:

  1. What is the next best CPU I can upgrade to that is compatible with a 300W PSU?
  2. What is the best compatible GPU for this motherboard and 300W PSU?

Thanks

Just some further advice on what and how you should upgrade your Veriton X6680G desktop. For the i5-11500 model cpu that you have in your Veriton X6680G model desktop, upgrade to the top spec cpu socket LGA 1200P model i7-11700 that Acer fitted to this desktop.

Do NOT upgrade to the 11th i7-11700 Gen F model that has its onboard graphics cores disabled, or the K model that can be overclocked which your desktops bios has no settings and will run hotter and the KF model that has no integrated cpu graphics and you will need a gpu card to run this cpu.

The i7-11700 cpu specs are as follows, it runs at a normal 2.5GHz and at a turbo frequency of 4.9Ghz / it has 8 cores and 16 threads / max cache of 16MB / TDP of 65W./ GPU min 350 MHz and max 1.3 GHz at max video memory of 64GB Acer part #: KC.11701.CI7.

Note: DO NOT upgrade to an 11th Gen i9 -11xx cpu as this desktops mainboard bios is not calibrated to allow the 11th Gen i9-11xx cpu's to work with the Veriton X6680G desktops.

Also and seeing that your desktop has the lower 300W PSU this PSU is adequate for the intergrated graphics from the cpu or to run the oem Acer fitted GeForce NVidia GT 720 at 2GB DDR3.64B.900MHz Acer part #: DA.72011.003 only, that is if your desktop does not have this gpu card, then you can upgrade to this gpu also as an upgrade.

If you want to upgrade to the higher end GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER that has 6GB GDDR6 vram and runs at a frequency of 14000MHz that needs a 450W PSU, you will need to upgrade to the oem 500W Acer 500W.100-127/220-240V~8/4A 50-60Hz - Acer part #: DC.5001B.009 model.

The best upgrade for your Veriton X6680G in my option is for you to do the below, as this is an adequate upgrade to make your desktop usable for future upgrades of Win-11 24H2 and the last OS build: 26100.4061and beyond and make the below upgrade worth while. so do the following upgrades:

    1. Upgrade the cpu from the i5-11500 to the i7-11700 cpu, buy this on eBay, as its cheaper than new
    2. Upgrade the gpu to the GTX1660 Super, you can buy the none Acer listed gpu as its cheaper
    3. Upgrade the PSU to the 500W Acer PSU part #: DC.5001B.009
    4. Upgrade the ram to at least 32GB to 64 total ram with DDR4-3200MT/s CL22 type ram into its 4x ram slots
    5. Upgrade the oem Kingston PCIe 3 X4 M.2 SSD drive to the faster PCIe 3x 4 lane 1TB or 2TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus M.2 SSD as its a much quicker read/write M.2 SSD drive and runs at 3450MB/s speeds and its also a much better supported drive and you can do a very easy clone with its Magician software section at Data Migration section of this specialist Samsung software also. 3,434 MB/s read/write M.2 drive

Populate the 4x ram slots like below for either 32GB or 64GB total ram with the DDR4-3200MT/s CL22 type ram modules to increase the editing and overall performance potential of this desktop, as that is a must do. Good luck and hope this helps you out further for successful upgrade.

A 300w power or even a 230w power can run a computer, but you can use a GPU without a GPU or a very old GPU.

If you buy a new GPU and it is a GPU that requires additional power with a 6pin or 8pin socket, 300w will not be enough. Getting at least 500w will be ideal for your system.

Tell us what you want to do with the GPU, your purpose, we will send you the appropriate GPU models.

The biggest reason why the problems are not solvedis if someone who says there is a problem with the GPU says; If I change the case, will the problem be solved? That's the whole point! The concepts are different! We should not go off topic.

    Hi @SemihB

    Thanks for your reply.

I am not a gamer, my partner sometimes edits videos, but not very high-level though. I simply would like to add a functionality of GPU, making it to run more smoother and good to have option if needed in the future if you know what I mean.

And I dont know if this desktop allows for increasing the PSU to work with the current motherboard, if you have any suggestions on the PSU, please advise.

And also, could you help with the CPU upgrade?

    thanks

@StevenGen Mate, that is the most comprehensive advice and tips I have ever received online… I am very thankful 🙏 and appreciate all of your time that you took to answer my questions. Good On Ya Mate… !! ✌️

    Please see below and advise:

    1. Upgrade the CPU from the i5-11500 to the i7-11700 CPU - I found this online, but it seems to be very expensive, around 500 Australian Dollars. I guess I can wait a bit, and hopefully the price will go down in the future.
    2. Upgrade the GPU to the GTX 1660 Super: I was researching online and found - Radeon Pulse RX 550 4GB GDDR5 - 65W and NVIDIA Quadro (T400 - 30W / T600 - 40W) … Do you think one of these would work with my Veriton PC's 300W PSU? Any suggestions will help. And also, do I need to change or check the BIOS settings to add a GPU?
    3. Upgrade the PSU to the 500W Acer PSU part #: DC.5001B.009 - Thanks for the part number, I would have struggled to find it online but this really helped, I was able to locate it online for AUD 100 brand new, so this is really a good upgrade and I hope motherboard and BIOS would not have any issues upgrading the PSU to 500W. Cheers mate.
    4. Upgrade the RAM to at least 32GB to 64 GB: I was thinking of upgrading it to 32GB, the PC came with 16GB Kingston one, so I will check how much it is online and upgrade.
    5. Upgrade the OEM Kingston PCIe 3 X4 M.2 SSD drive to the faster PCIe 3x 4 Samsung: I did not know if there was a difference. Thanks for those insights. So, my current Win11 PRO is installed on the default Kingston Drive. If I install a Samsung one in the available slot, is it possible to copy the drive to the Samsung drive and make it the default? Or do I have to make a fresh installation on the Samsung drive and then use the Kingston one as backup?

Thanks again, and apologies for more questions… just trying to get everything right before I make all the necessary upgrades.

    Cheers Mate.✌️

I'm glad to have helped you out anyway that I can mate, and yes, I'm in Australia also and the price hikes right across the board in especially the last 3 years and after a certain government has taken over, have made the prices in Australia increased at least 150% to what they were prior, so I appreciate the difficulty that you are in, as we are all in the same predicaments.

    Answers to your questions:

    1. There is for sale on eBay an i7-11700 cpu for AUD $170.39. its a cpu that was opened and never used, so that is pretty cheap and imo good value, so consider buying this cpu, as eBay have a very good money back guarantee ion the products sold on eBay.
    2. You can also buy used NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Super 6GB GDDR6 Graphics Cards or similar on eBay for AUD $250.00 or cheaper, so see the Aussie eBay list from the link above.

So doing these types of upgrades of the cpu, gpu, PSU and ram will cost you max AUD $700 which is allot cheaper than buying a similar new desktop in Aussie😁. Good luck and hope all this helps you out.
