[AN515-58] Fan Circuit Overvoltage (26V Measured) — Both Fans Burned Out

Hey everyone,

I'm reaching out because I had a serious issue with my Acer Nitro 5 AN515-58-58W, and I’d really appreciate any technical insight or help from those who may have experienced something similar.

Yesterday, I turned on the laptop normally, and after about 5 minutes, I noticed a strong burning smell. I immediately checked the fans and saw that both of them had stopped spinning. I opened the laptop and discovered that both fans were damaged due to a short.

To investigate further, I measured the voltage at the fan connectors on the motherboard, and to my surprise, they were outputting 26V, when I was expecting something around 5V–12V. This clearly overpowered the fans and caused them to burn out.

Has anyone encountered this kind of issue with this model?

Do you know what could cause such overvoltage on the fan headers?

Any known fixes or motherboard-level repair guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    Overvoltage is usually related to high incoming voltage or unbalanced current, and is one of the reasons why your computer's fans burn out? Answer;

    • Did the fans burn out while your computer's adapter was plugged in?
    • Were the voltage and amperage values ​​of your computer coming from the adapter measured and are the results correct?

    Otherwise, it is not possible for the voltage to increase or rise to a level that will burn the fan while the computer is not connected to the adapter and is working with its battery. Please check the electrical installation.

    Manual checks to be made;

    • Please find the positive and negative poles on the pins of the fans and test them manually by applying voltage with an adjustable power supply. If the fans are working, go to plan B. If they are not working, go to plan C.

    Find the plus and minus poles on the computer fan input sockets and check them with a meter!

    First check if there are small metal particles that will cause a short circuit inside the computer! Check for cable gaps, burns, cable open contacts, etc.!

    PLAN B;

    Unplug the computer's adapter and the battery socket in the computer. Press and pull the computer's on/off button seven times repeatedly. Find the positive and negative poles in the battery socket and measure according to the battery voltage, check if there is any imbalance. Then plug the adapter into the socket and measure the amperage with the ends as the outer minus and inner plus poles, check if there is any imbalance in the adapter.

    Then search the sections where the fan sockets are and clean them with contact spray.

    Plug the pins of the fans into the computer, plug the charging adapter into the socket and plug the end into the computer and turn it on again. Wait until the desktop comes up and check that the fans are working stably for 20-30 minutes. Then perform different checks on the other parts with the battery connected or the charging adapter disabled. Find out where any negativity originates from and make the necessary plan.

    PLAN C;

    Check the charging adapter voltage or amperage, battery voltage and amperage that we mentioned in PLAN B. Find places where there is an imbalance. Then just turn on the pc with the charger adapter. If there is no problem after working for 5 minutes, turn it off. Then run it with the battery for 5 minutes. If there is no problem, it means your fan is short-circuited. You can search on the internet for how to repair your fan.

    If your fan is not repaired in any way, you can remove all the parts of your computer, clean them, then buy a new fan, install it and use it.

    The voltage regulator chip might be faulty. You can lookup the board schematic or boardview on Badcaps.
