Hi, I want to upgrade my BIOS, but I'm afraid of the risks. I'm currently using an acer a314-22, with BIOS version 1.10. I want to upgrade to BIOS version 1.20. Is there anything essential that requires me to upgrade?

Upgrading your BIOS can be beneficial, but it's not always necessary unless the update addresses specific issues or improves performance. Acer advises checking the latest available BIOS version for your device and comparing it with your current version. If the update includes critical fixes, security patches, or compatibility improvements, it may be worth upgrading. However, installing an incorrect BIOS update can cause serious damage to your system1.

If your laptop is running smoothly and there are no issues, you might not need to update.

I hope this helps! If this was useful, please hit 'Yes' or 'Like'! Thanks! 😊

The more you update your BIOS, the less afraid you will be.

Are you looking at the correct page, there is no 1.10 for your laptop model and the latest BIOS is 1.21.

This is the original Meltdown/Spectre fixes in 2018 and the security fix is a BIOS update.

You will need to update your BIOS at some point in the future because post 2018 Meltdown/Spectre variants can also only be fixed by BIOS. If you don't learn to update your BIOS in everyday setting then you will be truely afraid when there is an actual need to update your BIOS.

Indeed, this is from my dxdiag. It seems that this is a very old version.. The problem is that I have seen several cases where the laptop remains bricked even after following the BIOS update procedure.

As I said earlier, you DON'T have a choice. We already know that BIOS 1.08 is to patch the Meltdown/Spectre vulnerability.

Even if your A314-22 doesn't need to patch a BIOS security vulnerability right now, it will eventually need to patch some kind of Meltdown/Spectre variant. Your next computer will as well, and the next next computer afterward, and the next next next computer afterward…

Meltdown/Spectre variants aren't going away, so you have to deal with your fear.

People get scared for no reason other than watching these stupid youtube videos. This youtube video is full of BS.

BOTH his asus motherboard (video at 1:55) and HP laptop BIOS updates (video at 16:16) are for security fixes --- which HP strongly recommends that you to update.

BIOS updates help to improve system performance or add new features. It also serves as an important way to do battery management. So, updating a BIOS is a good choice.
