how to make audio jack popup again

Previously, when I put something into the headphone jack, it would bring up a dialog box asking what type of device it was. It had an option "Do not ask again" and I checked it one day. Now I need to make it ask again and I cannot find the setting to save my life. Help?

Open Realtek audio console from start menu.

    • In the Realtek Audio Console, look for a section called "Device advanced settings" or "Connector retasking."
    • Here, there should be an option labeled "Enable popup dialog when device has been plugged in.
    • Make sure this box is checked. If it isn’t, check it and restart

If there is no realtek audio console, check for other audio software like this Waves MaxxAudio from where you can adjust same setting.

If you checked "Do not ask again" when plugging a device into the headphone jack (audio jack) on Windows, the system remembers your preference. To reset this and bring back the prompt, follow these steps:

Reset AutoPlay Settings for Audio Devices
Open Windows Settings (Win + I). Go to Bluetooth & devices > Devices. Scroll down and click on AutoPlay

Under Choose AutoPlay defaults, look for "Audio CD" or "Audio device"
If set to "Take no action", change it to "Ask me every time"
If you don’t see the exact option, click "Reset all AutoPlay defaults" at the bottom.

Clear Device Preferences via Control Panel. Open Control Panel, search for it in Start. Go to Hardware and Sound > Sound. Under the Playback tab, right-click on your audio device e.g., "Speakers" or "Headphones", Select Properties > General tab
Look for a checkbox like "Don't ask me again" and uncheck it (if available). Click Apply > OK

Delete Windows Audio Device Cache (Registry Fix - Advanced)
Warning: Editing the registry can cause system issues if done incorrectly. Back up first.
Press Win + R, type regedit, and hit Enter.
    Navigate to:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoplayHandlers
Look for a key named "DisableDevicePrompt" or "NoAskAgain" and delete it.
    Restart your PC.

    Reinstall Audio Drivers Last Resort.
Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
Expand Sound, video, and game controllers.
Right-click your audio device (e.g., Realtek Audio) and select Uninstall device.
Restart your PC—Windows will reinstall the driver, possibly resetting prompts.

Still Not Working? Try plugging in a different audio device—Windows may show the prompt again for new hardware.
If using Realtek Audio Manager, check its settings for a "Disable pop-up dialog" option.

I hope this helps! If this was useful, please hit 'Yes' or 'Like'! Thanks! 😊
