    2.disable unnecessary startup programs
    3.uninstall unused apps
    4.clean up disk space

A simple restart can clear temporary files and processes, often resolving minor slowdowns.

    Check Task Manager:
Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and see which processes are consuming the most CPU, memory, and disk resources. Close any unnecessary or resource-intensive programs.

Close unnecessary browser tabs and extensions:
Many tabs and extensions can slow down your browser and, consequently, your PC.

    Check for Windows Updates:
Ensure your operating system and drivers are up to date, as outdated software can cause performance issues.
To check for updates :Select the Start button, then select Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.

    Disable Startup Programs:
Some programs launch automatically when your computer starts, potentially slowing down the boot process. Disable unnecessary startup programs through Task Manager (Startup tab). To stop a program from starting automatically
Select the Start button, then select Settings > Apps > Startup .
In the Startup Apps area, find the program you want to stop from starting automatically and set it to Off.

    Check for overheating:
If your computer is overheating, it can slow down to prevent damage. Ensure proper ventilation and check fan speeds.

Thank you for these suggestions and I had taken many of these steps before reaching out. I also did a system restore although I only went back to yesterday morning before I began my own troubleshooting. None of these actions helped, unfortunately, but I have been able to narrow my problem down and it has something to do with the mouse. I've swapped out the mouse for a different one (fresh batteries) and there is still some hesitation when I click an item with the pointer. Sometimes the computer responds on the first click, sometimes on the second click, and sometimes it takes several clicks to get a response. The replacement mouse is working more consistently than the original mouse, but it still doesn't respond consistently.

When I left my computer 2 evenings ago (March 18), the original mouse worked perfectly. Would you suggest that I do a system restore to Tuesday afternoon, or do you have another suggestion that will focus on the poor mouse response?

    Thanks again for your help!

Just some further suggestions for an old AIO like the Aspire C24-890, that has provisions for 1x SATA III M.2 SSD drive only and does not work with a PCIe 3 type drive and also has provisions for a 1x 2.5" SATA III drive of either a mechanical or an SSD type drive.

I suggest that you check the boot drive if its functioning properly and doesn't have any faulty sectors as these SATA III M.2 SSDs can go faulty after 7 years and might need replacing (get a new 512GB or a 1TB boot drive) as that is a main source of an old AIO like yours slowing down, also check the ram if its not faulty also and I suggest that you upgrade the ram to 32GB at 2x 16GB DDR4-2666MT/s to operate allot smoother and even upgrade to Win-11 24H2 and its last OS build: 26100.3476 as this OS will operate allot quicker and will be supported beyond the October 14, 2025 Win-10 OS end of support date. Try all that and let us know, good luck.

    Try this steps,

    1. Uninstall unused programs. (AP)
    2. Delete temporary files. Whenever you use internet Explorer all your browsing history remains in the depths of your PC.
    3. Install a solid state drive.
    4. Get more hard drive storage.
    5. Stop unnecessary start ups.
    6. Get more RAM.
    7. Run a disk defragment.
    8. Run a disk clean-up.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Assuming that I've made all the fairly basic suggestions offered, can I conclude that a slow mouse is related to something deep in the workings of my Acer? I don't have the ability or interest to increase the memory or replace the boot drive, so am I may be better off replacing it if other performance issues become evident?

Choose your desired option: Select either "Keep my files" (to reset apps and settings while preserving your data) or "Remove everything" (to erase everything and return to factory settings).
Follow the on-screen instructions: Proceed through the prompts to complete the reset process.

    Method 2: Using Windows Settings
Open Settings: Click the Start menu and select Settings (gear icon).
