Working with an acer aspire 6930. Running LINUX MINT 21.3. External monitor will not work when plugged into HDM or D-Sub ports. Laptop monitor is disabled, and external monitor reports no signal.

HDM port used to work under Windows Vista. Not so much under LINUX. When I plug the HDMI cable in (known to be good when used with my Windows 10 machine), LINUX does not see the external monitor, so I am unable to extend or duplicate my acer monitor. (I was able to do this easily on my Windows 10 machine). LINUX reports that all my drivers are up-to-date.

Did you try to install the display driver?

There were no drivers supplied, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to go to the vendor's website and see if any are available. When I hooked it up to my Windows machine, it just worked. I'm finding this LINUX thing is a different animal, indeed.

Check on the linux if they have this driver 4500MHD.

It is for the graphics driver.

I have an Aspire 6930 that was pretty much useless as a VISTA machine. So, I got the bright idea to load LINUX MINT. I'm up to version 21.3. The machine is happy enough running this version, but I am unable to get a two-monitor setup to work past the login screen. Surely I can't be the only pioneer that's gone off in this direction. Has anyone else seen this? If so, have you resolved it? If so… HOW???

The LINUX forums say the kernel configures video and that there are no drivers to load.

Fn + F5 doesn't seem to do much. It certainly does nothing to improve this situation.

I modified my .profile file to add the three commands you suggested above. I have no idea where in the boot cycle this file is executed, but I suspect it's probably last in execution order. Anyway, I redirected output to a text file. A little more background… I've been chasing this issue for a couple of weeks. Where I'm at is… Machine is booted with an external monitor connected via HDMI. When the machine gets to the initial login prompt for password, both the native monitor and the external monitor are working as expected. The login password prompt comes up initially on the external monitor. If I move the mouse pointer from one monitor to the other, the password prompt follows the cursor. Once I enter the password, both monitors go dark (expected). Then, the mouse pointer is displayed on the native monitor. That's it. I can move the mouse pointer, but it is confined to the native monitor. No further boot progress is realized until I unplug the HDMI cable from the machine. Once I unplug the HDMI cable, the boot process completes and the machine functions normally. The output from the three commands you suggested above is in attached file video_data.txt.

After a bit of hunting, I also found a .xsession-errors file. I've attached that file as xsession_errors.txt.

I have no idea where in the boot cycle these messages are generated, but that seems like a lot of warnings and/or errors. However, the "failed to reset xrandr…" messages to seem to relate to the external monitor, an LG 32MR50CS-B, serial number 408TFJF1W788.

Funny you mention wayland. Just this evening, I installed updates regarding xwayland. Not sure what that got me, however, as the update did nothing to improve the situation.

As previously stated, both monitors work until the login password is entered. At that point, the external monitor shuts off and the machine sits there until I unplug the HDMI cable for the extended monitor, at which time the desktop comes up and normal operations resume.

switch to ubuntu 24.10 or 24.04 use wayland and see if that fix the issue

I'll have to do a little research on that option. I know nothing about the specifics of ubuntu or wayland, or what that means with regards to the user experience.
