Chromebook 715 TouchPad acceleration stuck on. How to fix uncontrollable scrolling?

My Chromebook touchpad acceleration appears to be always on even though it is supposed to be switched off on the settings — see attached

i find that scrolling is frustrating as I cannot control the speed . I keep overshooting

    What model of Chromebook do you have? There have been a bunch of different on the 715 model line. Your full model number is usually on the same sticker as your serial number, it should look something like CB715-xxx-xxxx. Which version of the OS is installed? That sounds like it could be a bug…

    thanks for the offer to help it has been going on for as long as I can remember I have just done a power wash without any improvement

    chrome OS Version 131.0.6778.241 (Official Build) (64-bit) up to date

    OK, so a CB715-1W model, an 8th gen Intel based system from 2019. They actually made two different base models of the CB715-1W, one with a fingerprint reader and one without, but the touchpad interface is the same for both. Looking at the hardware specs there doesn't seem to be anything special in the touchpad design so there is nothing I can think of that would cause your symptoms other than software. When you did the power wash, did apps get reinstalled automatically? I'm thinking maybe one of your apps is stepping on ChromeOS' toes and changing the behavior.

    Thanks for your insights i allowed play apps to be loaded automatically.

    I need to do another power wash and see what happens on a bare installation
