Can't use mic while earbuds are plugged in Acer Aspire V5 Touch

I own an Acer Aspire laptop, and use Skype along with other chat/communication services. When I have my Apple earbuds plugged in, I can't use the mic. I know that this is because there is only a single jack for both the mic and the audio, and when I plug my earbuds in, the audio input automatically switches to the jack, which has no mic attached. Is there any way for me to prevent the mic from being disabled? Thanks in advance.

    hi....

Follow these steps to configure the microphone :
Press the Windows + W key.
Type Sound into the Search field.
Click Sound from the list of results, The Sound window opens.
    Click the Recording tab.
Select the microphone, and then click Properties .
Check the box next to Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device .
    Click Apply

The box was already checked, so I unchecked it, and it still wouldn't work.

Does the earphone socket double as a microphone socket?

I know this is over a month late, but yes, the earphone socket doubles as microphone socket. I am having this problem as well on the same laptop and have been having it for a quite a while.

you will need to use the type of earbuds with microphone like those that come with cell phones.
