An515-58 FPS drop after updating Nvidia Driver

I got this laptop about 8 months ago, and it had very good performance the entire time. But then, about 3 weeks ago, I noticed I had an outdated version of my NVIDIA driver, so I updated to the newest version. After that, I got a very noticeable FPS drop in any games I played. Rolling back my driver didn't work since I updated more than once. So I would like to know if there's a way to find out what driver version I had before all of this or another way to fix it

How did you update that GPU driver? I recommend only downloading drivers/firmware from Acer Support or installing Optional Updtes from Widows and not directly from 3rd-party sites.

I updated it via Geforce experience. How are nvidia drivers a third-party site if there's an nvidia graphics card in this laptop? Also, could you please tell me which driver to download? because acer had like 40 drivers when I went to the drivers page, and I don't know which one to download

The best way to do this is download DDU freeware from the Wagnardsoft site and boot to Safe Mode (Shift+Restart) then with DDU in Safe Mode uninstall all NVidia drivers and just reboot, let Windows install the latest compatible dGPU driver. https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000091878/graphics.html

https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/715925/an515-58-fps-drop-after-updating-nvidia-driverHi, check the wattage your gpu is taking with softwares like MSI Afterburner. If it isn't even near its max tgp then the "nvidia platform and controller framework device" got bugged, this happens sometimes, and for some reasons nearly everytime you update your drivers with geforce experience without completely removing the old ones. I suggest doing exactly what @Puraw said, use DDU. Anyway, puraw, you got the link wrong, you linked intel drivers.

Latest NVIDIA drivers can be found here:

Will it download the latest windows generic driver or an Acer one? because I heard that windows generic drivers significantly worsen performance

I don't understand. You said to do exactly what Puraw said, but then you sent a link to an Nvidia driver download? didn't Puraw say not to do it? I'm very sorry if I'm missing something here.

Wrong, if you use DDU in Safe Mode you should not download drivers but just reboot and let Windows do the installing. The Intel link I posted above is for the article that explains how to use DDU not to download drivers.

Does the An515-58 come preinstalled with an Nvidia driver? or does it come with a different one? also will using DDU uninstall all of my games and files?

There is a driver page on this site with many drivers; will rebooting my laptop with DDU have the same effect as downloading one of those? Also, I heard that if you let windows download its own generic driver, the performance will be worse. is that not true?

Hi, Acer laptops come with the required video drivers, all what DDU does is uninstalling all the GPU drivers including duplicates or incompatible drivers also in the Windows driver repository, for that you need to be in Safe Mode so the video drivers to be removed are not in use. Nothing to do with your games, data or programs, you may have to install the GeForce Control Panel again but don't install the NVidia GPU drivers. There is a lot of misinformation on the web, I recommend that you don't download drivers from 3rd-party sites including Intel, AMD and NVidia, only download from Acer Support for your laptop model and enable "Get the latest updates" (More options, see picture) so you will get drivers and firmware offered by Windows endorsed by Acer.

Is there by any chance a video that shows how to do everything? because I'm scared i'll do something wrong.

Hi, there are no videos for that, but I will help you. It is a very simple routine.
Go online and in your bowser address bar type: www.wagnardsoft.com scroll down and click on DDU version 18.0.8.7 portable/self-extracting (2nd picture)

Save the file in your Downloads folder

Right click on the DDU v18.0.8.7.exe file and click on Properties, and tick mark (click) Unblock (see red box, picture below) and click OK

Create a new folder in C:\Users\YOUR NAME\DDU in File Explorer.
Right click on the DDU v18.0.8.7.exe file again in the Downloads folder and select Run as Administrator and click on Yes in accounts security.

Extract the unzipped DDU file to the new folder DDU you just created and hold the Shift key down while clicking on Restart on the taskbar. You will get the blue Troubleshoot menu with Advanced and click on Restart settings 4 (Enable Safe Boot). It will reboot in Safe boot and then you click on Display Driver Uninstaller.exe in the DDU folder (see picture below) and select GPU NVidia (right side 2nd picture). Click on Clean and restart. After that just reboot.

While rebooting, in the blue screen there was no startup settings option. It was replaced by a command prompt option. Also, sorry for asking twice, but are you absolutely sure that this doesn't delete my files? I don't know if I should backup some important ones just incase

No problem asking twice, there is no need to back up if you follow these instructions, all that will be installed are the NVidia GPU drivers that you may have downloaded or corrupted. you should see the Advanced options at the bottom of the blue Troubleshoot screen.

This tutorial shows how to get to Advanced Options with the Windows USB Recovery drive (same screens): Boot to Advanced Startup Options in Windows 10 | Tutorials

I did it. but it seems to have installed an AMD driver now because when joining my game I was able to use the AMD feature that is similar to DLSS from Nvidia. And in some first-person shooters, my FPS seems to have dropped to about 60. Do I just do it again to uninstall the AMD drivers?

Are you sure you selected GPU NVidia and not AMD in DDU?, you don't have AMD iGPU but an Intel chipset so how come Windows installed AMD drivers? Did you install that driver maybe or just rebooted and let Windows install the NVidia driver as per my instructions? Check again in Device Manager-Display adapters what driver was installed. Maybe your laptop is a Nitro 5 AN515-45 with an AMD processor?

for some reason it says that my driver provider is intel but then how would I be able to use the Amd DLSS feature? Im 100% positive I selected Nvidia, When entering msinfo32 in the run command, it says "model type: A515-58." I booted up in safe mode, opened the DDU, Selected Nvidia and chose clean restart

Hi, AMD DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) is a technology developed by NVIDIA, so it is not directly applicable to AMD hardware. However, AMD has its own equivalent technology called FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR).

FSR can be used on a wide range of hardware, including AMD and NVIDIA GPUs, and even integrated graphics from Intel. So, you can use AMD's FSR on systems with an Intel iGPU and an NVIDIA dGPU like what you have.

Make sure that Windows installed an "AMD graphics" driver and not firmware/apps described above. If it is indeed a graphics driver mistakenly installed by Windows (I have never heard of that happening), then yes uninstall the AMD driver with DDU or just in Device Manager, no need to do that in Safe Mode.

This is becoming too complicated for me to manage remotely; I recommend bringing the laptop to Acer Services in your country to reset the system to factory default and reinstall your games from scratch. Hope you get it all sorted out. 😉
