I don't for how long this has been going on, but I've noticed for at least several months this notebook has been running very hot… from 60c° to 90c° with just using a browser with a high number of tabs open but not running any CPU intensive apps. The system has been locking up (freezing) more and more often and when this happens it's always because the system is very hot. I've never been able to hear the fan running but I thought maybe this is just due to being very quiet but now I became suspicious that it's even running at all so I tested is as follows…

The notebook is propped up 1 inch off the desk and I placed my cell phone under it below the heat vents to record the fan noise during stress testing. With nothing much running and near zero CPU load the system was at 60c° degrees. I then ran the GTKStressTesting app to load the CPU at 100% and observed the temp quickly shot up to 90c° to 94c° in about 15-20 seconds.

The recording from my phone had no audible fan noise whatsoever, so I think the fan is not turning on. Or if the two fans are turning on (I think unlikely) they are turning so slow as to produce NO sound. This isn't possible right???

SYSTEM CONFIG follows (detailed config can be found here):

running Ubuntu based Pop_OS (not Windows).

A515-57-56UV (P/N NX.K3KAA.002)
Core i5-1235U config
Insyde BIOS V1.04 02/17/2022

I installed (32GB RAM stick, 2TB gen4 NVme SSD) in December 2023
and it's been working without problems for more than a year.

Corsair Vengence CMSX32GX4M1A3200C22 1x32GB SODIMM DDR4 3200MT/s
(the other RAM slot is empty for now until I buy another for 64GB total)

Lexar NM790 2TB NVMe PCIe gen4 (slot #2)
SK Hynix HFM512GD3JX016N 512GB NVMe PCIe gen3 in slot #1 (present when I bought the notebook)

I've got the exact same laptop and my Aspire A5150-57 -56UV is perfect and runs faultlessly and perfectly in all applications, I've upgraded the boot M.2 SSD to a WD Black SN770 PCIe 4x4 boot drive and the latest Win-11 24H2 OS build: 26100.2314 for your information.

But the inside of my laptop doesn't look anything like your corroded fan casing and thermal module, and as JackE is saying, you must have used and exposed this laptop to very humid and a wet environment for the fan casing and fans to be so dirty with felt and for its thermal module to have corrosion also, as that is why the fan has failed and your laptop is overheating as its cooling is shot. Inspect all the cooling components of your laptop and clean its inside with a brush and a Compressed Air spray can to get rid of all dust and dirt then put new paste and thermal pads also. Good luck and hope this helps you out.

Below is the A515-57 fan that you require, search for the highlighted part number on the web

Inspect the thermal module also if its not damaged as changing the module could also be necessary for ultimate cooling of the laptop.

For another example, as I write this I have only my Vivaldi browser running with all background tabs hibernated and all CPU cores at around 5% or less and the temperature is about 60c degrees.
That's pretty hot for almost nothing running on a Core i5-1235u isn't it?
This CPU has a TDP rating of only 15 watts (typical) to 55 watts max.

If i start using the huge number of browser tabs eventually the temp will climb up to around 90c which is when the system will lock up (randomly over the course of days).

Well I took the lid off the notebook and observed only 1 of the two fans was working. So I swapped their positions and again just the same one was working (in either position). However, even that one fan that did spin-up at times (like when entering the BIOS) it didn't spin very often and I couldn't hear it when I re-ran the GTKStressTesting app and loaded the CPU 100%… the temp got up to over 90c at times during the test and I could not hear the fan turning on.
That said I did hear it spin up fast/loud once upon initial starting up (Pop_OS Linux).
So I'm not quite sure what the problem is but I'm going to replace both the fans - they both had a lot of rust on them - not surprising as I live on the beach.

PS. as far as I could see researching this notebook does not have a CPU fan sensor, so there's no way to see how fast the fan is turning, if at all.

The CPU fan seems to have been repeatedly exposed to very humid conditions with evidence of water vapor condensation on the on the thermal module ducts. If you have a second fan, it may not be functional for this particular mainboard with only one GPU. From your description, the blade bearings on both fans are probably corroded.

If the thermal module hasn't been physically damaged, you should replace the CPU fan with a new one. Don't try to use the other old fan. Google part no. 23.K3MN2.001 for vendors who ship to your location. New fans cost ~$20usd.

yeah I already ordered two new fans as this model has two and they are both very rusted and one non-functional.
I will pay to have a tech clean the circuit board, repaste the CPU and install the new fans.
I live in Brazil and on the beach which you can see the result in just two years.
thanks for your time and opinion. ✊

oh wait, @JackE what did you mean by "it may not be funcional for this model with only one GPU"… do you mean that by design only one of the two fans operate? I don't think so, but I want to make sure I understand what you mean. Also how can I determine If the thermal module has been physically damaged or not?

Your A515-57 model should have only one GPU that's integrated within the CPU chip. The A515-57G model is similarly equipped with an integrated GPU/CPU but also has an additional separate higher performance dedicated discreet GPU chip. The 2nd fan cools this discreet GPU chip but only if and when it's present on the mainboard. Otherwise, the 2nd serves no function even though it might still be spinning at least for a few moments when the laptop is first turned on.

Very interesting… but what I observed was one fan would spin up but only for a moment the other fan would not. So I swapped them and then the same fan spun up more forcefully upon OS booting (Linux) and the other fan still had no movement at all. But even then performing a CPU benchmark test the fan would not spin even with the CPU reaching 90c degrees for 30 seconds.
In any event I figured I'd replace both fans to be sure and anyway there are inexpensive.

yes, as I said I live on the beach in Brazil so humid plus salty air. I had a Lenovo Ideapad before this and the same thing happened to the fans in it. Eventually after over 5 years the motherboard died (not surprising). Thanks for the feedback and parts numbers.

@StevenGen @JackE do you guys know at what temperature the fan normally kicks in? Just curious to know as per my CPU benchmark/stress testing.

@StevenGen @JackE Well the fans arrived today, but the vendor made an error and only one of two fans was correct. I installed the correct one in the right-hand position closest to the CPU which it looks like is the correct location for my model (with Core i5-1235u w/integrated GPU). Now everything is working as expected. I ran the CPU benchmark test and temp's were fine. This is a relief to know that there doesn't seem to be any permanent damage, though I realize the life expectancy might have been lowered by running hot for so many months.

Btw, for anyone viewing this thread, when entering the BIOS settings the fan is always spinning so that's an easy way to know if you're fan is working or not.

Also for people in other countries it might be helpful to know the fan I bought (in Brazil) is identical to the original but wasn't specifically listed as for the Aspire 5 model A515-57 but it's the same as in many other Aspire models:

    Part Number: DFS541105FC0T

    Compatable NOTEBOOKS:

    • Acer Aspire A515-51

    • Acer Aspire A515-51G

    • Acer Aspire A315-21

    • Acer Aspire A315-21G

    • Acer Aspire A315-34

    Btw @StevenGen @JackE I have a BIOS version that is a bit old - BIOS V1.04 02/17/2022
Is it advisable to upgrade or since it's working fine (even with one 32GB RAM stick) … so don't do it?
    1) The risk of bricking is low with BIOS upgrade or not?
    2) Are there changes in the newest BIOS version that is worth it?
    |

EDIT: I see Steven said here the WiFi 6 change is worth it
"…The BIOS titlesUpdate for Winfi 6E setting version 1.19 is for the settings of the Wi-Fi 6E that improves the 6GHz band to the existing 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands available in Wi-Fi 6.…it doesn't need the BIOS version 1.21 but I have upgraded to BIOS version 1.19  for my Wi-Fi."

thanks for yall's expertise and attention. -B-

    my device again is: A515-57-56UV (P/N NX.K3KAA.002), Core i5-1235U, Insyde BIOS V1.04 02/17/2022

The BIOS upgrades are all cumulative and safe to perform from my v1.04 version?
