I thought when I ordered my Acer spin 714 i5 chChromebook that I ordered a Fingerprint Sensor. It arrived without one. When I look at the "my build" breakdown a fingerprint Sensor is included. Does that mean I should have one?

Which specific model do you have? Your full model number is usually on the same sticker as your serial number, it should look something like CP714-xxx-xxxx. There have been a bunch of different CP714 model lines, with literally hundreds of different SKUs. Some have fingerprint sensors and some do not… With my Windows Spin the fingerprint is integrated into the power key.

    Hi,

Acer states for the Built-in Fingerprint Reader: "Specifications may vary depending on model and/or region". So, if this is not working/present you have the Spin 714 CP714-2W or CP714-2WN, confirmed in this link:

Do you have the fingerprint sensor shown here as #7?

Needless to say, the 1WN and 2WN are very different. Also be aware when searching on Acer's sites, use "CP714-1WN", not "CP714- 1WN". Their search is just brain dead enough to not recognize the extra space.

Wow….thank you all for your help. CP714-1WN53M9

I looked at the link posted above however it was about the next 2W model . I definitely have the model I posted before. Is that the model # you asked for ? I just reread my entire build sheet and it's mentioned a few times. I know that was something I was looking for along with a backlit keyboard. I have the backlit keyboard. I've checked everywhere I could think of on the machine but I don't see it. I still have the booklet that came with it. The sensor is depicted on the diagram. If any other info could help you just ask…. Best regards……

Yes, that user was just confused as to which model you asked for. Do you have the fingerprint sensor shown in #7 on the diagram? It was optional…

No,I don't have the sensor anywhere. I'm so disappointed. I wanted / needed it due to cognitive and dexterity medical issues. When I was reading my build info sheet I don't recall seeing the caveat mentioned above by Axxo about depending on the model number. The sensor is listed in a few areas. I found it difficult to get specific info regarding which models of Acer Chromebooks have the fingerprint sensor included. Until looking into this sensor I never knew there were so many different models of Acer spin 714.

I sincerely thank you for all of your input. Do you know of any apps or extensions that can replicate an alternate way of identifying yourself to open / unlock the Chromebook ? Take care …

I know for Windows machines an external fingerprint sensor is fairly easy to come by, as are smart card readers. For a Chromebook it looks like external fingerprint readers aren't supported, but smart card readers are. Would that work in your situation? You would just use the smart card the same as the fingerprint reader to unlock the Chromebook. The only other real solution would be to send this one back and replace it with one that has the fingerprint reader included. Adding a fingerprint reader to yours would be a fairly expansive issue, since you would need to replace that top cover, which has the keyboard integrated into it.
