Nitro AN515-54 "low" ethernet speed

Hi everyone!

I'm having and odd problem with my laptop that I just can't find a solution for.
I've recently had a gigabit fiber optic link installed. On my PC I'm getting around 950 Mbps download (sweet!). However, when I plug the same cable into the laptop, I'm only getting 350-400 Mbps.
Looking at the task manager, I can confirm that the connection IS made over the cable, and not over WIFI (I even switched it off in the tray). Also, nothing seems to be using the bandwidth prior the start of the test.

I try to keep the number of apps which start with my Windows (10) to a minimum, and for the purpose of testing I've removed those non essential ones which I thought might be causing the slow-down (even though I didn't really think it would make any difference, since I have way more apps installed on my PC and it still gets almost the full speed).

The only way I was able to get the same speeds on my laptop as I'm getting on my PC, is when I booted the laptop in safe mode with networking.

For what it's worth, I keep my system updated, so old drivers shouldn't be an issue.

I'll try restoring an image I made just after I installed Windows, in the next few days, to see if a pristine OS makes any difference. In the meantime I would greatly appreciate any help you folks can provide.

Tnx in advance.

Go to your Ethernet setting whether the speed negotiation to select 1.0Gbps and test it.

    Thanks for the quick reply!

I'm not getting the option for 1.0Gbps. This is what it looks like for me.

This is weird because based on this website, the E2500 killer is a Gigabit Ethernet (https://hothardware.com/reviews/killer-e2500-gigabit-ethernet-controller-preview). Even your hardware title already mentioned "KILLER E2500 Gigabit Ethernet Controller Properties".

Since you used the same hardware and cable, hardware issue might not be an issue. Probably the problem might on driver/software/laptop hardware itself.

Did you install the "KILLER CONTROL PANEL"? Try to uninstall it to see any changes.

    Yeah, it's weird.

Anyway, I did have the Killer Control Panel installed. I removed it and ran the test again...no change.
I restored a disk image I made immediately after I installed Windows...no change.
While I had the image up, I checked the adapter properties, and it still didn't show the 1Gbps option.

I tried in safe mode with networking once more, and it worked (but that was no surprise).

I'm sure it's not a hardware issue (safe mode proved it). So my only other route is to redeploy the historic image and start uninstalling like mad, hoping I stumble across something that's bottle-necking the connection.

Other than that it might be some obscure setting buried somewhere deep in windows.

    Anyway...I'll keep trying.

    Thanks!

    Hi Easwar.

I used Ookla and fast.com + I had the Task Manager open to check if Windows agree with what the speed tests were reporting.

I know this is an ancient post, but did you ever find a solution? My laptop has the exact same issue as yours. Same model and issue with the speeds and the duplex setting not showing gigabit and all that as well. Haven't tried the safe mode boot yet however.

    I found the solution

I found the solution, I had this problem but with the updated Acer Nitro 55 model (so one gen newer than whats described in the Original Post).

The solution is to click on the search bar and then type in "killer", you go to the killer intelligence center. From there click the settings wheel in the far right. Disable the "auto bandwidth", then set the bandwidth. Mine was capped at 34.4. I didnt realize until I upgraded to Starlink that my pc was capped. My speed was only an average of 27mbps before, but now Im able to utilize any speed. I set my values to 1000.

This will fix both wifi and ethernet limitations.
