Hi, I've been having a problem with my acer swift 3, it shuts off after about 5min of playing a game (overheats at around 91C). CPU even runs idle at around 60-65C.How do I fix this? I don't have a torx screwdriver or thermal paste right now but I assume that's the best option? Either way, how do I fix the overheating/shutting off problem. Thank you.

If you don't have the MX150 without fans you can download Acer Quick Access and turn on fan control (Cool Boost). If you only have integrated graphics, you should play light games and use Best Power Efficiency mode in Power and Battery settings. Also keep the power adapter/USB-C charger plugged in 24/7 and the battery charged 100%. If your Swift 3 model has fans, they may need cleaning, consider bringing the laptop to Acer Services in your country to clean/check the fans and for thermal repasting.

We really need to know just which Swift 3 model you have. There have been a lot of them over the years! Your full model number is usually on the same sticker as your serial number, it should look something like SF3xx-xxx-xxxx. Running at 91C isn't unusual for the non-gaming rigs when gaming, shutting down due to overheating requires over 100C, and that would be unusual.

It tends to reach around 92C, and if it stays there for more than 5 or so minutes, it shuts off. It never used to run that hot… I dont know what happened.

Here is the fan table for your system:

So they are working to try to keep it between 62C and 90C with a forced power off at 100C. Throttling kicks in at 98C, so 92C means the throttling is working, since temperatures will stabilize when throttled. You are likely either going to need to repaste or just clean the cooling fins, either way you need the proper screwdriver to open the case.
