Hello,

I recently noticed that my touchpad on my Acer Swift 3 SF314-52 is popping up. The left side seems sunken in, while the right side is elevated and stiff (see pictures below). The touchpad itself works fine and I can move my mouse cursor, but the left and right clicks do not work. I usually use a wireless mouse so I typically don’t use the touchpad for clicking at all.

My laptop has been exclusively at my desk for these past few months, so I don’t believe it was dropped or hit anywhere. Also no water damage.

I don’t know how relevant this is, but I’m also experiencing some battery issues. My laptop needs to be plugged in at all times or else it’ll immediately shut down. In an attempt to reset the battery, I clicked the mini battery reset button at the back with a pin, but that was about it.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Since I assume your system is well out of warranty, your best next step is to open up the back of the laptop and inspect the battery. When batteries get old they can sometimes start to swell, and that swelling can push on the back of the touch pad. If there is any indication that is the case you need to replace the battery as soon as practical. Swelling is an indication the internal divisions in the battery are failing and in the worst case they can short together, causing a fire.

Hello, thank you for your response!! I haven’t been able to inspect my battery just yet, but it seems likely that it is swelling. I also greatly appreciate the fire warning - if I didn’t know any better, I probably would’ve continued to use my laptop plugged in.

In the meantime, I’ve been searching for a replacement battery, but I am unsure of what my battery “part” is. By any chance, do you know the battery part for Swift 3 SF314-52-58TX is?

Sure, here is Acer's part number and description:

There should be plenty of them available in the secondary market.

Hello, thank you for the battery part number! As a side update, I was finally able to check the battery and it was indeed quite swollen (spot-on analysis from you).

I can’t be sure of my touchpad’s condition until I get a replacement battery in, but for now, everything seems okay (clicks are working!)

Thank you so so much for all your help so far - I really do appreciate it! :)

There's not much that can go wrong with the touchpad itself, unless physically damaged, and the typical swollen battery thing doesn't put enough torque on the mechanics of the touchpad to do that. You should be good to go with a new battery.
