I purchased my laptop from Amazon barely 2 months ago. I also have a problem with the frame but mine is at the right hinge.

I'd closed the lid while I went off to make some lunch & when I returned to it half an hour or so later & lifted the lid back up again there was a loud crack that came from the right hinge area, it has split the frame completely, it looks as though the retangular piece of metal in the area of the hinge has pushed forward & put pressure on the very thin plastic frame causing it to break open. For the price of the laptop, which was top of my budget, I expected it to be of better quality than this and certainly last more than 2 months!

I've also taken a ruler to the top edge of the frame and, by lining up the top corners, there is a perceptable, but slight, bend in the middle.

Since this happened, I went back on Amazon again to have a look at reviews to see if anyone else has had this problem. I found a video of the same issue on a 10 month old laptop, which makes me think this may be a manufacturing fault.

I've tried contacting Acer but their office appears to be closed at the moment.

This is mine, in Volcanic Grey after just 2 months. Not impressed with the build quality!

  • I always advise holding the display cover in the middle when lifting and lowering the cover. Now, about the problem with the hinges, it would be interesting to contact technical support.

The person on Amazon stated that Acer presented them with a bill for over £250 to have their 10 month old laptop with the same damage to have it repaired - would I also expect to be billed for this?

I am absolutely not suggesting you try this. Please continue your efforts getting the frame fixed by Acer and/or Amazon.

But if this was a 4-year-old laptop like mine (for information only):

"retangular piece of metal in the area of the hinge has pushed forward & put pressure on the very thin plastic frame causing it to break open" That item is the short metal hinge leg somehow connected inside the polycarbonate panel frame and when the hinge is stuck or too tight it can break loose and push the bottom of the frame outwards breaking some the small plastic clips that close the frame in the process. I fixed it permanently with 2 component HD epoxy adhesive, like cement, applied it generously under the frame and behind that "rectangular" hinge leg. Then pushed the frame back to its original position that involved some small furniture wedges squeezed between the keyboard and panel and placed a small glue clamp tightly screwed over the bottom corner of the lid and screen frame so there was no longer a gap visible. I left my 15" laptop (90 deg. open) upside down (like a roof top) between 2 bookstands to dry for 1 night. That fixed it, but like  egydiocoelho above wrote I also open the lid carefully in the middle first and then with thumb and index fingers at the base pushing the lid slowly open, as the hinge of any laptop is the most vulnerable mechanical part (and most used). Some state that squirting a few drops of oil inside the hinge assembly helps relieving friction/tightness of the hinge, I don't recommend oil on any polycarbonate/plastic surface, a special type of high-tech industrial fluid maybe.

    Hello @Lima6.

It's hard to tell exactly what happened in the case of the user you referred to, but if your notebook is under warranty and this damage wasn't caused by misusages it shouldn't apply to you, the best practice in this case is to contact the support to have it analyzed, and then have their diagnosis. Additionally, on the same site, you can access your region's standard warranty information in case you want to check it out.

    Best Regards,

My daughter's laptop was a couple of weeks past a year old when we reported the same fault. Does seem to be rather a lot of reports of the same fault doesn't there?

Acer's response? "Our of warranty" - £60 just to look at it and we might not have the parts. Not nearly good enough.

Think I need to talk to Citizens Advice about whether a laptop which falls apart after just longer than a year meets the requirements of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 section 9 Goods to be of satisfactory quality (3) The quality of goods includes their state and condition; and the following aspects (among others) are in appropriate cases aspects of the quality of goods (e) durability.

I too have an ASPIRE 5 Laptop. 3 years ago On may 2021 in the midst of the global pandemic we bought this Laptop thinking : nice alluminum case. Didn't realize it used thin plastic and cheap parts to hold it together, all for the fine price of 650.00 on Amazon.com.

3 years later my wife noticed the clicking when she opened the laptop: She asked me to look at it:

WOW: the frame was coming forward on the bottom right as I applied pressure as always from the top middle to open the lid. Man, this is unacceptable for such an expensive Laptop with an expensive "look". 3 years and to the landfills they go….this is insane.

Unfortunately that matches the experience with my daughter's laptop. A "Vero" model, it was purchased because it used recycled plastic and was about as green as anything less than a Framework laptop could be.

The screen bezel started to come away with the hinge failure just a few weeks after the warranty expired. In the end Acer did repair it at no charge, but only after putting us through the £60 to get it looked at, no guarantee we won't charge you several hundred pounds to repair it after that - the deal I bought it under had the laptop at £499, so paying half to two-thirds of that to get a manufacturer design fault fixed after just over 12 months was not filling me with joy.

I've had quite a few Acer machines over a number of years - typing this on my wife's Chromebook - so this was a very disappointing episode.

Incidentally, in common with quite a lot of manufacturers Acer seem to have dropped their warranty period from 2 years to one just as soon as the UK left the EU. UK law requires court action but a device like a laptop could be expected to be free of design faults for a lot longer than two years, so what you need to do is stand your ground.

same problem was seen after 8 months as i didnot use y laptop for 10 days .after that when i saw my frame, it was detacched from screen at the both hinges, i quickly went to the shop i bought it from and they repaired it insted of replacing it with new hinge, i had to pay NRS.1800 as they claimed it as hardware damage that couldnot be claimed by warranty but there was no hardware damage, and after about 8 months again same problem started but i was far away from the shop and did not pay the attention to it, one day suddenly when i was openin the laptop the left hinge broke the frame, i used the laptop without closing it like a desktop for 11 months and today i repared it at local shop by replacing the hinges and gluing the frame to the screen. i know its the temporary fix,, but seeeing many problems similar to me, i think its the design fault too, also i have noticed the acer laptop mostly has hinge problems, also the acer vero has low built quality, thanks, i hope acer notices these problem and improves in the future,
