I think!

Looks dodgy this one, but I'd be immensely grateful if anyone has any ideas or can even point me in the right direction. Basically I was streaming a video (on a less than reputable site I might add!) when my acer laptop just went blank. The power light stayed on and everything seemed normal except the screen going black. Left it for a while, got impatient & turned it off by holding down the power button. Turned it back on & it sounds like it's about to go into a reboot & then it doesn't. It just does nothing. The light just stays on a constant blue & there's no sounds or anything. I let the battery run down and tried again with the same results. I also tried holding f8 & that does nothing either.

Help!

I'm using windows 7 btw

Dodgy, yes.  Do any other lights light up and/or can you hear the hard drive or fan starting up?

I am in the process of replacing the LCD panel of the screen of an Acer Aspire 5742 belonging to an aquaintance.  I can detect that the LED backlight built into the panel has stopped working: by shining a strong light onto the screen at start-up I can see the name "ACER" in dim letters.  Do you have the possibility to connect your computer to a TV or external monitor.

If your model uses the older backlight type using neon tubes with an inverter, it could be the inverter that is faulty.  I bought an inverter in error for the computer I am repairing not realising that it does not use one (since it has an LED backlight).  Replacement is relatively easy for someone with skill in electronics and should not be too expensive (although I received a large range of estimates from different sources).

    Best of luck

No other lights light up & you can hear the fan & hard drive go for about 1 second, then it just stops & nothing - no sounds, no lights, not even the power light flickering. A guy on another forum suggested the motherboard could be gone?
