Screen dimming and brightening on V5-571

Have I purchased a dud laptop here?

As you can probably tell, it's me again - the one with the stuck pixel problem, the battery wear problem, the fan constantly on problem - and now a new peoblem to add to that list.

If I press the start button on my keyboard which takes me to the start screen, then go back to the desktop where I cam from, the screen is noticeably dimmer. You can then see it slowly brighten up again.

This is nothing to do with the power cable (I know the screen dims when you run on battery and remove the charger lead) and nor is it my brightness settings, which are set to 100%.

I had noticed lately the screen doesn't seem to be as bright as when I first got it. You can only really notice it though when you go from the start screen back to the desktop - the difference is quite astounding, and you can see the screen gradually get brighter again.

Is this a 'feature'? If not I am starting to wonder if I should return it to the online shop where I bought it, but I am concerned, because I have transferred a lot of my data onto this machine and wouldn't want any of it remaining if I was to send it back for a replacement/refund.

What are your thoughts?

You appear to have quite a combination of problems with your notebook.

I would seriously consider using your warranty and getting it repaired/replaced/refunded.

On a side note I went on holiday after posting regarding your pixel problem.  The screenshot you posted looks like a clump of pixels rather than just one, it also look like it is in the top right corner of the screen.  I usually leave the pixel program running overnight and see what I come back to.

Your GPU is probably GT 630M/640M/650M. If this is the case - check your drivers and if they are higher version than 314.22 - uninstall them and get 314.22 - nVidia released some new unstable drivers that just don't work good with these GPUs.

Thanks for the reply AnarchroNia, however this laptop has an Intel HD 3000 graphics chipset. I still notice this happening when I back out from the start screen and I am still wondering if it is by design.

Does this laptop have adaptive brightness? The setting is there in Power Management, which would suggest it is - but there are no sensors on the screen.

Alex, SOMETIMES you can solve your pixel problem by gently pressing the spot with the eraser end of a pencil. I've used this method on two different computers, and it worked on one of them.
