I got that notification when I had a mouseover on the battery icon in the tray.

"98% available (plugged in, not charging)"

What does "not charging" mean? What does the notification mean, afterall?

    Good day

Try the following: go to device manager, remove/uninstall anything under battery, restart the machine. If the fault is still there, after doing that, then the battery is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Hello CelestialBeing, This generally mean just what it is saying that the unit is plugged in at the time but is not able to charge the battery. The normal steps to take with this is make sure you have a solid grounded connection, make sure you take the battery out (if removable) and make sure there is no dust between the connection. If the issue remains i would then look into support.

To give more info on this more info would not hurt.

    1. What is the unit?

    2. What is the OS? Win7/ Win8/ Win XP?

    3. Will the battery charge up to 98% or is the battery slowly going down and never up?

Here's a bit about the laptop unit and the habit in using it:

    Acer Aspire S3 Core i5-2467M, so it's a non-removable battery

Pre-installed Windows 7 Home Premium, which had already been set to factory settings once, and updated to the latest updates through online Windows Update (Now it's already Service Pack 1)

And it's charging up, it never goes down when it's plugged in. It's just stopped at 98%.

Oh, and I keep it plugged to the charger everytime I use it. I take off the charger when I'm done and close the lid / turn it off. I do a full-discharge cycle once a week or two.

I seldom turn the laptop off. When I'm finished doing my work on it, I just close the lid and it goes to sleep . . . deep sleep when sleeps for a certain length of time. I restart it once a week, or when it needs to restart after it's got security updates.

Well that's all about me and my Aspire S3. Hope you guys can shed some light on my problem.

Try the steps I provided. Try to use the unit without the charger  and see if the battery life is too short. Here is battery life of S3 as per Acer Support: +-6.5 hours for models with SSD and +-5.5 hours for models with HDD.

When I first bought my Aspire S3 (which is currently dead as a doorknob), the battery seemed to last all day, even beyond Acer's claim of 5.5 hrs. But I did notice that on recharging it would go up to 98 or 99 percent real quick then take forever to get that extra little bit done to 100 perc. I figured that might just be an idiosyncracy of some batteries that seem to resist "topping up."

My old Toshiba (old faithful backup unit) laptop goes to 100 and stays there, plugged in all day and recharged only once in a while, just like you say.  But something tells me these Aspire "permanent" batteries dont work that way. Right now I'm not getting any power at all from my adapter and so the battery has totally depleted and the adapter is not even powering the computer plugged in.  Dont know if that had anything to do with leaving it plugged in all day or not.
