I searched here and in google to find solution to my Chromebook power on problem. It was frustrating as no one had addressed it so simply as I discovered by fluke. All I need to do now is simultaneously hold CTRL and power on button for about a second. Then simultaneously hold SHIFT and power on button. Starts up immediately after that. Yay!! Hope this helps someone else with this issue.

That should not be the case of powering on a Chromebook, your problem seems like a power key switch problem that needs replacing. What is the Acer Chromebook model number?

Thx for comments! Model No. N3160. It works perfectly now. After reading comments, I also pressed power button for a second, released, and then it started about 3 seconds later. I'm used to my Dell laptop and iPad—both of which power on immediately without that 3 seconds lapse. I think this is the norm with this chromebook now though I bought few years ago and problem only surfaced in last few months.
