Aspire X1400 Desktop crashes and shows blue screen

My desktop crashes and shows blue screen when both memory slots have ram (3 gb). The computer works properly when only one slot has memory in it (2 or 1 GB). The PC has original RAM and configuration. No other hardware was added. It worked properly for 2 years until recently I downloaded a virus. I removed virus and reformatted HD and reinstalled windows 7. The problem was not solved. Could the virus have entered the Bios. What else could it be.

    Hi oldmtl,

I am certainly not an expert, but I have always been told that having mismatched RAM will cause problems, including the dreaded BSOD.  So, just based on what you have written, I would recommend that you get another 2 GB stick of RAM and replace the 1 GB stick with it.  This may be the problem and it won't hurt to increase your RAM.

It is theoretically possible for a BIOS to get infected with a virus, but it is very rare, since every BIOS is specific to the machine it is in and the virus would likely have to be tailored to your machine's BIOS.  Not that it isn't possible, you understand, just that it is less common.  Again, I am not a computer expert, but after reading your query, I thought I might give you my 2 cents.  Good luck with your quest.
