Hi. My laptop no longer goes into tablet mode when I flip it. I can change the screen orientation manually. In settings there is no longer an auto mode for display orientation and in the quick links at the bottom RHS the icon for fixing the orientation has disappeared. I've done a factory reset but it made no difference. Any ideas? It appears to be a software as when I put it in tablet mode and turn it round the screen follows.

    Hello!!

    @rosejeffmo

    1. Click Settings from the Start menu.
    2. Click System and select Tablet Mode on the left.
    3. Under When this device automatically switches tablet mode on or off, set accordingly.

Checking screen rotation settingsIt's also likely that you might have accidentally turned on the rotation lock option that prevents your device from rotating. If this is the case, do the following:Use the Windows key + A keyboard shortcut to open Action Center.Click the Expand button. Click the Rotation lock to turn it off.Quick Tip: You can also control this option under Scale and layout on Settings > System > Display.Change the orientation of the device to see if it rotates automatically. The utility will scan, detect, and fix common problems with the sensors on your computer, including the motion sensor.Click the Close button.

    >>After completing the steps, try to change the orientation of the device to see if auto-rotation works.
If your device doesn’t switch automatically to Tablet Mode, you can do the following to access Tablet Mode manually:Click the Action Center button in the Taskbar. When Action Center opens, click the Tablet Mode. You can also enter Tablet Mode using the Settings app:  Open Settings > System > Tablet Mode.Make sure that Make Windows more touch-friendly when using your device as a tablet is turned On.If you want, you can also change how your device will work when you automatically switch Tablet Mode on or off.

    >>Running troubleshooterIf the screen will still not rotate, you can use the Sensors Troubleshooter to fix the problem.Download the Sensor Troubleshooter from Microsoft. Double-click the SensorDiagnosticTablet.diagcab to launch the experience.Click the Next button. If you find that the Screen auto-rotate option is greyed out, backup the Registry. and then open the Run command by pressing Windows Key +R.Type regedit and click on Ok.Now navigate to the following path:

    1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AutoRotation
    2. Find key LastOrientation and double-click on it.
Add 1 in DWORD value data field and click OK to save the changes.Next, use Ctrl+F to search for the SensorPresent key. If it’s available, double-click on it and change the DWORD value to 1. If it is not available, you may create it under AutoRotation and give it a value 1.
      Restart your PC and see.

    regards,

    Hi LunaNova14

The machine I have is a chromebook not a windows machine. Sorry I should have made that clear.

I'll ask the moderators to move the thread to the Chromebook section. Which OS version are you running? Google is the one that does the OS updates, so perhaps they goofed up one the latest rev.

OK, if we assume the issue is hardware rather than software (not a likely scenario) then there is a sensor board in the display half of the laptop that monitors G forces and potentially distance from the other half to determine what position everything is in. That board connects to the motherboard through a cable running beside the hinge. If it is disconnected at either end or the wires have breaks internally the system wouldn't see the change in mode, so the OS wouldn't do anything.

More likely, some change Google did in one of the latest updates doesn't correctly read those sensors, giving the same results as if it were hardware. It's also possible they just changed the user interface to enable and disable the sensors, with disabled being a new default. You might check on their forums to see if they have seen anything like this with the 115 releases, and potentially switch to one of the beta channels for testing…

It's started working again. I have absolutely no idea why but perhaps there was some software update, thanks for the help.
