Nitro AN515-58 BIOS Upgrade Causes 0x8028008b PIN Error and Buggy Sleep Behavior

Let me preface this with the fact that I normally use the laptop with the lid closed and connected to a 4k external monitor. To boot it, I open the lid, press the power key, and then close the lid again.

I upgraded my Nitro 5 (AN515-58) from BIOS 1.04 to 1.10. Now, after a reboot and bootup, if the laptop is idle for a few minutes, it goes into a mysterious sleep mode (lid closed) where the backlit keyboard goes dark and when I tap a key, the keyboard lights up but the laptop doesn't wake up on my external monitor. Now I have to open the lid to get it to wake up and then when I try to log back in using the PIN, it gives me the following error: "Something went wrong and your PIN isn't available (code: 0x802008b). Restart your device to see if that fixes the problem." Neither of these bugs happened before upgrading the BIOS.

I really wish I hadn't upgraded the BIOS, because everything worked perfectly before I did it.

Anybody else having this problem?

Yep. BIOS upgrades are primarily meant for production mainboards with serious issues. That's mostly why the big red warning is at the top of the firmware updates. Installing them on a perfectly functioning laptop risks irreversible adverse or annoying side effects or worse.

There is an even riskier method for going back to v1.04. Sometimes it works to get you back to where you started --- a perfectly functioning laptop. Sometimes it bricks the machine.

If the machine was mine and still under warranty, I'd probably try the even riskier method to go back to v1.04. But it's not mine. So you have to decide if you want to try to go back. I can try to walk you through the go-back method. But no guarantees or even a guesstimate on the odds it will work.

    Hi Jack,

Thanks for the response. I think I figured it out. I went into the BIOS settings and noticed there was a setting for USB wake from sleep that was disabled. I never went into the bios before so I don't know if that option was there prior to the upgrade. In any case, I think when I tapped on the keyboard it didn't wake up the laptop and then for some reason when I did wake it up by opening the lid and pressing the power button, it had the pin error. I enabled wake on USB and I haven't had the problem since. Now when the machine goes to sleep and I tap on the keyboard after a couple seconds the machine wakes up and the pin seems to work fine. I'll respond here if I have the problem again, but so far it's working just like it did before. I love the laptop and it works perfectly for everything else so I don't really want to risk downgrading. I think I'll leave well enough alone for now and we'll see how it goes.

    Thanks again,

    Norm

Hey, did you have the problem again? I have the same problem, I will perform the procedure you mentioned, but I would like to know if it still works…
