Hello! 😉

Laptop: Acer Aspire V5-572G

ОS: Win 10х64 build 1809

Inner videocard: Intel HD Graphics 4000, driver from Intel 15.33.53.5161 by 23.10.2020.

Discrete videocard: NVidia GeForce GT720M, driver from Acer 353.24 by 28.07.2015.

I connected 1th outer monitor LG 27EA33 (1920x1080) from HDMI, but can not do the same with 2th same monitor from mini DisplayPort (miniDP) (tried connectors miniDP>HDMI, miniDP>DVI from Aliexpress), it's seems I tried everything, with reinstalling Nvidia driver (as I see 2th monitor from miniDP tried to connect to NVidia GeForce GT720M.

Is it possible to connect 2 outer monitors to this laptop at all? And if yes - how to do it?

Help please! 👨‍🔬

    Hello!!

Even if your laptop only has a single HDMI or USB-C port, you can connect dual monitors. Using a suitable HDMI splitter, a USB-C dongle, or a USB-C dongle with HDMI interface, you can easily connect two or more monitors to your laptop.

an HDMI splitter will give you two displays, but they will have the same image on each. You want a dock that generates it's own video signal. All USB 3.0 docks with HDMI or DP (or for that matter VGA or DVI) on them will work, and the USB-C docks that doesn't require DP Alt Mode will also work. Careful on the USB-C docks, you often have to dig into the fine print to see when they require Alt Mode...

Dear LunaNova14, thank You very much for Your reply!

So did I understand You correctly that I can use USB > HDMI adapter like this:
    https://www.lazada.co.th/products/goojodoq-6-in-1-usb-type-c-hdmi-usb-c-usb-30-macbook-pro-i2122692326.html?spm=a2o4m.searchlist.list.52.23fe435d5Gn6yg

(with USB-c > USB adapter because in my Acer Aspire just only USB 3.0):

    https://www.lazada.co.th/products/0-caravan-crew-type-c-to-usb-adapter-usb-c-male-to-usb-adapter-20-a-female-otg-type-c-i2247598266.html?spm=a2o4m.searchlist.list.46.1add27dfzpKLsY

    right?

And how can I check if this adapter "doesn't require DP Alt Mode"?

Or even cheapest one like this:

    https://www.lazada.co.th/products/songful-type-c-usb-31-usb-c-4k-usb-hdmi-303-in-1-i1410478934.html?spm=a2o4m.searchlist.list.64.23fe435d5Gn6yg ?

(cause Lazada is closer for my current destination than Amazon, eBay, Aliexpress, etc..)

You need an active USB-to-video signal converter, not a passive cable adapter, since your USB are data-only and don't natively support alternate mode video output. Acer users have reported the follow USB video signal converters work for data-only USB ports.

Dear JackE, thank You very much for so many info.

So You mean that better to use Dock stations with additional electric supply ("power in") like this?:

But some usual adapters without these additional electric supply were useful too (according massages from Acer community), like this:

    Right?

They all seem to be OK but not 100% guaranteed. StarTek, WaveLink & CableMatters brands are usually good. However, you should purchase one from a vendor with a good return policy just in case it doesn't work.

JackE, thank You very much, I will try! I read here that anyway I will need "Generic Windows USB xxx display driver" for these connections - do You know which one is suitable for my Acer Aspire V5-572G?
LunaNova14, so when I choose Dock station I should control that it doesn't require DP Alt (DisplayPort Alt Mode) like on this Wavlink (https://www.lazada.co.th/products/wavlink-12-in-1-usb-c-universal-thunderbolt-type-c-displayport-dual-4k-ips-fpv-85w-pd-4-usb-sd-tf-reader-i4517158125.html?spm=a2o4m.searchlist.list.115.40cb1504Y2N8Od):
"5. The type-c port of your laptop should support power delivery, DisplayPort Alt Mode and data transfer, or the function will be limited." => This model does not suit us.
Maybe this Wavlink would suit (cause nothing with "Alt Mode" in description) but I don't confidence: https://www.lazada.co.th/products/wavlink-usb-30-universal-laptop-docking-station-dual-video-monitor-supports-dvihdmivga-to-2048-1152-gigabit-ethernet-audio-6-usb-ports-for-laptopultrabookpcs-intl-i122299346.html?spm=a2o4m.searchlist.list.63.21327baaq3v6aj

Generic usually means it's part of the Windows operating system. If any driver downloads are needed they should come with the converter instructions. As I mentioned earlier, your USB ports do NOT support alternate mode video output. So you should not purchase any dock that requires alternate mode video output. The WaveLink in the list that I posted does not require alternate mode so it should work.

Dear JackE, thank You very much for Your replies.
    In my country I found:

    1. Wavlink UG39DK1 (2K resolution): https://www.wavlink.com/en_us/product/WL-UG39DK1_Black.html
    2. Wavlink WL-UG39DK1V (2K resolution): https://www.wavlink.com/en_us/product/WL-UG39DK1V.html
    3. Wavlink WL-UG49DK1 (4K resolution): https://www.wavlink.com/en_us/product/WL-UG49DK1.html

and in the descriptions I don't see alternate mode (DisplayPort Alt Mode) so I suppose they should be suitable but only in description of Wavlink WL-UG39DK1V is written: "Extend Mode- Extend your working desktop with split-screen presentation to enhance work efficiency" - I don't see the same in 1), 3) models - so it's better to buy WL-UG39DK1V or newer model WL-UG49DK1 has "Extend Mode" too but they didn't write it in description in some reason, what do You think?

And one more question - if everything will be ok with these dock stations the video signal through: USB 3.0 > dock station > the second outer monitor will be by primary Intel HD Graphics 4000 or discrete NVidia GeForce GT720M?

    »>what do You think?

As mentioned earlier, buy from a vendor with a good returns policy just in case. These USB signal converters usually use the integrated GPU. Furthermore, the refresh rates are usually 30Hz or less. So they would not be suitable for modern gaming if that is your goal.

I got it, dear JackE, thank You very much.

How do You think - all these 3 Wavlink models has "Extend Mode" (for extending working desktop, not just mirror)?:

    1. Wavlink UG39DK1 (2K resolution): https://www.wavlink.com/en_us/product/WL-UG39DK1_Black.html
    2. Wavlink WL-UG39DK1V (2K resolution): https://www.wavlink.com/en_us/product/WL-UG39DK1V.html
    3. Wavlink WL-UG49DK1 (4K resolution): https://www.wavlink.com/en_us/product/WL-UG49DK1.html

and which of them You would buy in my place? (I don't play games, extending working desktop is needed just for work)

Click on the wavlink website pre-sales services chatline. Then ask if the models are similar to the ‎UG69DK1 model that other Acer users have reported to work on USB ports that don't natively support alternate -mode video output.

    Got it, JackE, thank You!

And if I correctly understand - using discret NVidia GeForce GT720M through Acer mini DP port (VGA) is imposible to extend working desktop to 3 monitors, just only for 2 (laptop + 1 outer through VGA), right?

  • JackE
    JackE ACE Posts: 44,868 Trailblazer

The miniDP port would likely use the discrete adapter. The USB port would likely use the integrated adapter. Since only one adapter can be used at one time, I would also guess that two independent external monitors is maximum running at one time..

"The miniDP port would likely use the discrete adapter" - Indeed: Win shows that signal to miniDP obtained by discrete NVidia GeForce GT720M.

"The USB port would likely use the integrated adapter" - yes.

" Since only one adapter can be used at one time" - so external monitors through integrated video-card or through discrete - not simultanasly (1 external monitor by integrated video-card or1 by discrete), right?

" I would also guess that two independent external monitors is maximum running at one time" - I am planning to collect money for good dock station like Wavlink WL-UG49DK1 to connect 2th external monitor from it by USB 3.0 (1th external monitor is connected now by HDMI) - both to integrated video-card  Intel HD Graphics 4000.
