GX-281, max Ryzen CPU Supported? I can't seem to find the max supported with the last BIOS updates.

I have a GX-281 with the Ryzen 1400x.

A bit of upgrades have been done since purchased in December last year.

It has the latest BIOS flashed on, 860evo 1TB SSD, 32gb of ram, and a Nvidia 1060 8gb card in it.

Now to upgrade the CPU to something a bit more stout since the Ryzen 2xxx series are out and prices are dropping.

I can't seem to find if its the 1700x or the 1800x is the max supported with the last BIOS updates.

And what heatsink/fan combo are people going with these days to fit inside there without rubbing other components for such a CPU upgrade?

Spec says 1700X but AMD suggests the 1800X should work as well. Acer officially will leave it at 1700X since they haven't done regression testing on the newer one.

Hmmm... It would be nice to go with the 1800X , I don't mind spending a few extra bones for the best CPU that the motherboard will allow.
I can't seem to find any confirmation that the 1800X does in fact work out for anyone with the GX-281 with latest BIOS updates.

Acer uses the same heatsink module in all of the GX-281. ......including the 95W 1700X....according to the specs.

So the 65W 1400, 65W 1400X, 65W 1600, 65W 1700, and the 95W 1700x all use the same part (which you already have).

The link below shows a comparison between the 1700X and the 1800X.
Might be more reasonable to play it safe and go with the 1700X. I'd probably just go with 1700X.

Thanks for the info. Went ahead and just got the 1700X. This is for my 19 yr old autisitic son, who works at Amazon, and he has paid for all his own upgrades to this system so far.

He wanted to push the system a bit more and wanted the CPU upgraded as pretty much last thing to really do without swapping motherboard and such.

This should keep him pretty much satisfied I hope for a while.

AMD Ryzen 5 1400 CPU
8 GB DDR4 RAM, 1 TB HDD, 256 GB SSD
16 gb ram (upgraded from 8gb)

I read on a different forum that someone tried 2700x in the GX-281 and it didn't work. They said they were using the latest BIOS R01-A4. They said it wouldn't post. That's all I know.

You can use Ryzen 1700, but not the 2700. They're not compatible with the motherboard. I believe the 1700X will also work, but I'm not sure I've seen that combo in the wild.

Is the GX-281 compatible with a ryzen 5 2600? I'm planning to upgrade my ryzen 5 1400 and rx 480 to a ryzen 5 2600 paired alongside a RX 5700XT.

The only new information that I can add to this thread is the 1800X does work (but the 1800X is not supported by Acer and was not tested by Acer to work in the GX-281). I'll assume you've already read all of the posts in this thread so I won't repeat them.

The 1700x,1800x,2600 are all pretty close (as far as benchmark). I understand why the 2600 is appealing due to the significant price difference. I get it. My guess is the 2600 won't allow it to POST....i.e. the 2600 won't work. That's just a guess.

Yeah, any of the 2xxx chips require a different MB. 1700 is the best really stable one, 1800 a bit more iffy.

So here is a question I have not seen answered yet, The board can take the ryzen 1400-1700 but could you use a lesser processor like the amd athlon 3000g ? It is AM4 platform and should be even less intensive.

a) POST: power on self test. I look for the fans to start spinning and work out from there. Also have acquired A Lot of test equipent.

b) I have a bookcase full of old motherboards (mostly with CPUs). Some toys go back to 8088s.

c) Have recently bought (Amazon) an AMD Ryzen 5 2600G for a Benjamin, 16GB DDR4 3200 for $44, Mini-ATX with AM4 socket for $55, and a 480W ATX power supply for $30. You may not need a power supply if have an ATX PS already so right on $200 to upgrade. Less if you can reuse things like memory more if you want a SSD (I have several Acers from 250GB to 960GB).

d) AMD Ryzen 3 3100 (no graphics) or 3200G (has graphics) are AM4 and even cheaper. Have a 3100 in a desktop running Win 11 right now. Am wondering if your mother board does not support a CPU with graphics (on a separate board) & why a 2600G wont work on your MB.

Ryzen 1xxx should all work, newer will not. Mine came with the 1400 standard, which should be faster than the 1200 if only because it can do eight threads instead of four.

I'm curious what will actually HAPPEN if you put say a 2000G or 3400G in this motherboard. Will it just fail to boot, or just work at the max speed/specs for the motherboard?
