Memory Update for Acer Aspire 5 A515-57-53T2 Anyone have a recommendation on precise specifications

I am considering purchasing this laptop. It comes with a 12th Gen Intel Core i5-1235U | 8GB DDR4 | 512GB NVMe SSD. I am considering increasing the memory to 32GB by taking out the single 8GB module and adding two 16GB modules. I don't yet have the laptop, so I can't really look at the specific memory used. I know it is DDR4, but not sure about frequency and CAS latency. Anyone have a recommendation on precise specifications to look for and/or a specific brand/model? Thanks!

    Hi,

You can upgrade memory up to 32GB with 2x 16GB DDR4 3200MHz SODIMM modules, avoid any modules with XMP profile, like Kingston HyperX or Corsair modules.

    Acer Aspire 5 A515-57-52Y8 / A515-57-54UD 15.6" FHD Laptop ( i5-1235U/8GB/512GB SSD/H&S/W11 ) Ram Upgrade 16GB,24GB,32GB (itcomp2u.com)

While I know the laptop comes with and supports DDR4 memory, it appears, at least from the specs on the 12th Gen Intel Core i5-1235U, that DDR5 memory with up to DDR5 4800 MT/s is supported. This might give the laptop a performance boost - including the integrated GPU which uses system RAM. Can anyone confirm if I could use the faster DDR5 memory in an Acer Aspire 5 A515-57-53T2?

Actually in poking around online it sounds like the pin layout between DDR4 and DDR5 is different, which means that the memory slots would be DDR4 specific for this laptop and thus it would not support DDR5 memory, even though technically the Intel Core i5-1235U could support DDR5 memory.

  • Hi,

No, DDR 5 is not backward compatible.

Thanks for the confirmation brummyfan2. I had come to that conclusion myself after doing some research and updated my post.

I am considering purchasing this model as well, but my idea is to upgrade the ssd storage.

You said that it comes with a single 8gb ram module (one empty slot), did you confirm this info in your purchase?

Is it available any other ssd/hd slots? If there is, how many and which are?

I live in Brazil, so, when I arrive in US to buy it, I need to be sure these informations. I intend to buy the product already with the storage upgrade.

Beforehand, thank you very much, and apologies for my rusty english.

Hi Dan. I have not received it yet, but it should actually show up today. Once I open it up I can let you know. I actually suspect it will come with 2 4GB modules. And I believe it has two slots for SSD's - one occupied (PCIe 3.0) and the other empty (PCIe 4.0). But I'll confirm after I open it up.

Thank you very much, my friend!

    Please let me know it!

Sorry for the delay Dan. So it does have two memory slots that are filled totaling 8GB. And there are two SSD slots with one filled with the included 512 GB NVMe .

I was struggling to completely remove the back cover of the laptop and I did not want to risk breaking it, so I was not able to visually confirm the type of SSD slots. However, I believe there is one PCIe 3.0 and one PCIe 4.0 SSD slot (as per the video below).

Note that I ultimately decided to return mine. I have an older Aspire E5-576G-5762 that is still working fairly well. The new laptop seemed to boot up slower than my older one (although this may be more of a Windows 10 vs Windows 11 issue). I am sure I will eventually upgrade to something better, but I am not in a rush. I also may want something with more graphics horsepower.

    Thank you very much, Tony!

The sdd type slot have low importance to me, as I wish to upgrade just the documents and archives storage. I intend to let the OS and programs running in the original ssd driver.

I think it will be a nice upgrade to my 7th gen i3 Samsung book hahaha I started to work as a programmer since june/22, and that is the reason for my upgrade.

I hope you can find a better product for your purposes!

    Have a nice christmas!

Glad I could help Dan! I am actually a retired software developer (ERP systems for large companies). But I miss software development and plan to try my hand at publishing a game for Android - more for fun and learning, at least to start out with. Best of luck with your career and happy holidays!

You don't have to open it up. Here is a Linux hardware probe of mine that has not been upgraded yet: https://linux-hardware.org/?probe=984e01118e

it shows SK hynix HFM512GD3JX016N 512GB SSD and this is in PCIe 3.0 slot. The empty slot is the PCIe 4.0.

RAM is two slots with SK Hynix HMAA1GS6CJR6N-XN 8GB SODIMM DDR4

Btw, nobody should be thinking about ddr5 right now anyway...

    https://www.tomshardware.com/features/ddr5-vs-ddr4-is-it-time-to-upgrade-your-ram

"While the former (ddr5) offers 6% higher performance, it's also 99% more expensive than the latter (ddr4). DDR5 pricing won't remain this high forever, but DDR5 can't compete with the value of high-end DDR4 until it improves."

and that SK Hynix HFM512GD3JX016N 512GB SSD it comes with is pretty fast: https://www.harddrivebenchmark.net/hdd.php?hdd=HFM512GD3JX016N&id=27941

  • The Nitro AN515-57 has the following storage specs suggested by Acer, as you can see the first subsystem list is for the AN515-57 laptops that has the lower spec gpu's that are for the SSD1 slot that is the boot drive which is a PCIe 4x4 and its SSD2 M/2 slot which is the slave drive, which is a PCIe 3x4, so be aware of that.

The higher spec gpu AN515-57 has both SSD1 and 2 at PCIe4x4 so putting a PCIe3x4 will reduce the slave drives performance by putting this PCIe3x4 SSD M.2 drive in that slot and will affect gaming and high-end software performance as the PCIe3x4 M.2 SSD drives are at 50% slower max speed to the PCIe4x4.

I put a single 32GB Corsair RAM stick in my Aspire 5 A515-57-56UV leaving the other slot empty for future use and it seems to be working fine: part number is CMSX32GX4M1A3200C22

Good morning, I just want to ask why you suggest to avoid RAM with XMP?
I want to upgrade the memmory of a A515-57-520B, this one has a i5-12450h prossesor. However, and I have only found rams with XMP in my local stores.

  • They may not work, you could try them but make sure that you can return them for refund, I told you to avoid memory modules with XMP because there's no settings available in BIOS to enable XMP in this model.
