Hello

I am hopeful someone is able to help with this query. I am looking for an upgrades I could do for my laptop as it is always running 99% CPU and is very very slow.

I upgraded the hard drive to a 500gb SSD and installed windows 10 but still having problems.

Computer spec attached.

Thanks so much in advance 🙏🙏

Sorry the CPU can't be changed as its soldered to the mainboard. You might try to identify which processes and programs seem to be using the CPU so much by reviewing Task Manager's Processes tab. Sometimes 3rd party scanners cause issues like this and should be uninstalled, not just disabled. Defender and Mallicious Software Removal tool are all the most users need these days.

Ah okay thanks mate, I am not sure I will have a look tomorrow. Would installing an older version of windows help?

I shouldn't have any rogue programs on there since I upgraded the windows I haven't even used it or downloaded any programs.

Do you know a quick way to remove all the junk programs from a new windows install?

    Thanks again

Just in addition, you have to realise that your Acer ES1-523-24Z1 is not a high end performer and it has its limits. Yes upgrading the spinner HDD to an SSD is a good move but the only other thing that you can upgrade this laptop with is to increase its memory to its max total of 16GB, from its 8GB, do a Crucial System Scan as this scan suggests a total of 16GB at 2x 8GB DDR3-1600 • CL=11 • NON-ECC • SODIMM • 204-pin • 1.35V • 2Rx8 • PC3-12800, and by upgrading the memory it will ease your cpu from “running 99%”.

As mentioned above, and due to this laptop having a soldered-on AMD E1-7010 cpu with its integrated Radeon R2 Graphics you can’t upgrade this aspect of this laptop and that is one of the weakest parts of your laptop.

This machine should run super-fine on Win10 Home since the Acer OEM Win10 version was usually factory-installed. What did you mean when you said earlier that you installed windows 10 on the new SSD?

I ask because the OEM Win10 factory version and hidden factory reset partition on the old HDD should've been migrated or cloned to the new SSD. If you installed Win10 using Microsoft's USB media creation tool, you have a generic Win10 which might not run as well as the factory OEM version.

Thank you very much for this, I used the crucial system scanner and got the part numbers for the DDR3 rams and ordered 2x 8gb. The laptop may not be high spec but it was gifted and it will only be used for office & internet so I'd expect it to at least function. Upgrading the hd and ram is cheaper than a new laptop. I will update when installed see how it goes.

    Thanks

    Hi, thanks for the reply.

No I had to upgrade the windows using USB stick after I changed the hard drive. I didn't come the old HDD because it was a family members I just installed new.

I still have the HDD though, do you think if I try to come the old windows it will install to the SSD in be a more efficient way?

    Thanks

If you still have the original HDD, you can try to clone or migrate its OEM factory installation and its hidden recovery partition to the new SSD. However, it would require re-installing the old HDD and connecting the new SSD to a USB port using an expensive USB-to-SSD adapter --- less than $10usd. Pretty straightforward but a time consuming process.

However, before doing anything, you should try to identify which processes and programs seem to be using the CPU so much by reviewing Task Manager's Processes tab.

Yeah I still have the old HDD in a 2.5in usb enclosure so I can give that a try. My plan would be restore the HDD to factory settings by pressing the recovery key on start up. Then clone to the SSD installed by usb. Download cloning software and transfer over to SSD.

Then would I update to latest windows by download?

Any adjustments to this process you think would be beneficial would be appreciated.

    Thanks

That would be good if you can restore the HDD disconnected from the internet. The reason being is System Protection in Control Panel's restore point app is usually turned off by default with a factory reset. This might cause an errant update to slow things again. So it's best to try to restore offline (you'll probably get notices to connect or skip steps during the process). Then after restoring, you turn on System Protection before reconnecting to the internet.

    Thanks!

My replacement RAM is coming in a few days so will install that before doing anything.
