I bought a Nitro 5 a few months ago and am running into read/write speed problems with the hard drive. I want to add another SSD (OS is on 128 M.2 SSD, and I have a 1 TB hard drive) in the extra M.2 slot. I was wondering what type of M.2 SSD I need. I know there are M.2 SSDs with one slot and there are others with two, which one do I need? My model number is AN515-54-51M5.

    Hi,
One slot is for PCIe only and the other one for PCIe/SATA M.2 SSD.

Is it compatible with both though? For example, would I have to get a Samsung 860 or 970?

Your Nitro AN515-54-51M5 supports the Samsung 970 EVO NVMe SSD also and is expandable and upgradable to the following:

    1.
    Memory - Maximum Memory: 32GB *Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory. Slots: 2 (2 banks of 1) Standard Memory: 8GB removable at 2x 16GB at DDR4-3200 Gaming Memory (Black) - DDR4 PC4-25600 • CL=16 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR4-3200 • 1.35V • 2048Meg x 64)
    2. Storage - Drive Interface: SATA/M.2 SATA Version: SATA 3 - 6Gb/s up to 2TB (M.2 Type 2280 Internal SSD - M.2/NGFF (2280) Single Sided • 560MB/s Read, 510MB/s Write)
    3. Your Chipset is the Intel Series 300

I've got the  Nitro 7 AN715-51-752B that I've updated with a 2TB Samsung 970 EVO NVMe SSD (yes its expensive but worth every dollar) and I've also upgraded the OEM RAM with the Crutial 32GB (2x 16GB Kit) DDR4-3200 Gaming Memory (Black) this Nitro comes with the Intel Core i7-9750H and 4GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 and these upgrades have made this gaming laptop an absolutely magnificent laptop, you cant go wrong with doing those updates. I've replaced the OEM M.2 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD with the Samsung 970 EVO NVMe SSD and copied the OP with the excellent Samsung "Data Migration" software and its been working perfectly without any problems. Highly recommended.

@StevenGen how did you get your RAM to operate above 2400mhz without using intel xmp which the mobo doesn't support. I know Kingston has a plug and play xmp stick. So how did you get your Crucial RAM to run at 3200?

This is a very complicated BIOS mod (that I don't recommend for the layman to do and/or attempt) you have to mod the Nitro AN715-51 2020/03/02 v1.25 BIOS to get DRAM and all its list of the primary timings and their associated jargon e.g. Primary CAS Latency, RAS to CAS Read Delay, RAS to CAS Write Delay, RAS Precharge (PRE) Time and RAS Active (ACT) Time, then and after, you use the “Ryzen DRAM Calculator” (btw, it works for Intel too) to calculate overclocking timings, its very complicated but it works, it took me 1 week to mod all this. Sorry but I wont post here as BIOS mods are not permitted on this forum and this mod could brick systems for most people that haven't got the experience to mod BIOS's.

Totally understand mate and it's well beyond me, I knew that you had to do something with the BIOS

So... Does the Nitro five have two NVMe/PCI-e slots or one NVMe and one SATA?

The AN515-54 has two M2 expansion slots
    Slot 1: NVMe PCIe ONLY
Slot 2: NVMe PCIe OR  SATA 2.5"

So you can have two NVMe's or one NVMe and one 2.5" SATA

Question please, the notebook has 3 slots, you refer to two of the three slots, how about using the three slots at the same time, Slots 1 and 2 with PCIe and Slot 3 with SATA, is that allowed?
