ACER Aspire 3 - won't wake up when I close the lid then reopen it

It all started when the ACER Aspire 3 I own started to get jittery video playback. I decided to install an Intel Video Driver thinking this might fix it. It seems to have resolved the jitters, but now the laptop won't wake up when I close the lid then reopen it. Pressing and releasing the power button does not work. However I can hold down the power button for several seconds then release it. Wait a few seconds and press the power button quickly and it restarts, but all my apps are closed because of the restart.
