i want to upgrade to ssd in my laptop Acer Aspire A315-55g-709w  whta type of ssd can i use m.2 PCIe or m.2 NVMe
Your Aspire A315-55G-709W has an M.2 drive interface of PCIe Gen3 x2 and the 2.5" drive is SATA 3 6GB/sec that can be either mechanical 2.5" drives or 2.5" SSD drives, below is a list of the Acer fitted OEM M.2 and 2.5" drives that Acer fits to your laptop, they don't fit 2.5" SSD drives for cost reasons. Also note, that fitting any of the newer M.2 PCIe Gen 3.0 x4, NVMe 1.3 will not give you any read/write speed advantages as fitting these NVMe M.2 drives of PCIe Gen 3.0 x4, NVMe 1.3 will operate at PCIe Gen3 x2 read/write speeds but these PCIe Gen3 x2 are very hard to buy these days so you will probably be forced to buy the PCIe Gen 3.0 x4, NVMe 1.3 M.2 drive. This is just my opinion, have a look at the WD M.2 and 2.5" range as the WD is very reasonably priced while the Samsung range are more costly but are faster, so its your choice as their M.2 980 Pro NVMe PCI 3 x4 is a very fast drive but unfortunately your laptop will not be able to utilise that speed.

This is the difference between M.2 PCIe Gen3 x2 and PCIe Gen 3.0 x4 and the newest NVMe 4.0 so that you will know the differences (have a look at this article NVMe X4 Vs X2 Slot SSD: Differences, Test And Results)
    • NVMe 3.0 x2 – budget high-speed SSDs running on the PCI-E 3.0 bus. A single PCI-E 3.0 lane has a theoretical throughput of 8 GT / s (Giga transactions per second), which equals 985 MB / s. The x2 marking implies two lines, that is, the speed is up to 1970 MB / s. In practice, however, the speed is usually slightly lower. Legacy motherboards, as well as many modern gaming laptops and ultrabooks, have an M.2 NVMe x2 slot.
    • NVMe 3.0 x4 utilizes four PCI-E 3.0 lanes (up to 32 GT / s or 3940 MB / s). The use of such a fast solid-state drive, at times, imposes restrictions on other connectors on the motherboard. For example, some of the PCI-E x1 / x4 or SATA slots can be deactivated.
    • NVMe 4.0 – this the latest and newest interface compared to its predecessor, its throughput has doubled – up to 16 GT / s. For SSD manufacturers who have hit the ceiling of PCI-E 3.0 speed, this will again free their hands. Btw, have a look at the Samsung 980 Pro [One of the Fastest PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs on the market]

Acer OEM M.2 PCIe Gen3 x2 512GB Drives but you can fit 1TB and 2TB or higher drives:
    • SANDISK SDAPNUW-512G-101
    • KINGSTON RBU-SNS8154P3/512G
Acer OEM 2.5" SATA 3 6GB/sec mechanical drives at 1TB and 500GB capacities but you can fit 2TB or higher drives:
    • TOSHIBA MQ01ABF050
    • WD WD5000LPCX-21VHAT0
    • TOSHIBA MQ04ABF100
    • WD WD10SPZX-21Z10T0

Yes you can use the WS NS570 they are good M.2 drives and will work very well as a boot drive, you won't get the full PCIe 3 x4 speed but this drive will work 100% with your laptop, make sure that you clone your old drive with a good cloning software like Macrium Reflect v8 also.

Yes you can as that is even better, just install Win-10 through your old Win-10 operating system or through the installation USB and go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options and boot the installation through the USB and if this new M.2 boot drive is not recognised by the Win-10 installation then you need to install the "IRST (Intel® Rapid Storage Technology) Driver Version: 17.5.0.1017" from your A315-55G Acer Driver & Manual site (make sure that you download this driver FIRST and have it on a separate USB and ready) when you need it at the installation process, as this driver will make the Win-10 installation recognize this new M.2 drive and you can proceed with the installation, this is very important as allot of times the boot M.2 or 2.5" drives are not recognised and they need this Intel IRS driver.

Then proceed with the Win-10 installation and update windows, install all Intel and graphics drivers so that your laptop has all the latest drivers. Its also a good idea to install the Intel® Driver & Support Assistant as that install all the latest Win-10 drivers for your laptop. Then go to "Device Manager" and see if there are any one installed drivers and if there are? Then go to the A315-55G's Acer drivers page and get the obsolete drivers from there as then you will have all the drivers and your laptop will be completely up to date. That is how you do a proper and 100% "Clean Install" of Win-10 and it will make your laptop fully functional without any problems.

Hi @StevenGen , thanks for the information. I was also planning to buy an SSD extension for my A315-55G 709W.

While your suggestions helped me to decide on the SSD, I have a dual booted system and wanted to ask the path forward.

I was thinking something like having Ubuntu being installed on my M.2 SSD drive and since I do not use Windows much, I leave it as is on my HDD. Moreover, the data of the ubuntu partition on my HDD can be transferred to this SSD via some backup drive.

Is this possible to do? If yes, could you elaborate on the exact steps or point to some resources which will allow this type of upgrade?

Any help is appreciated, thanks a lot!

  • Hi! As you want to install linux alongside windows, in dual boot, I advise you to change the sata mode to ahci in the bios. But to do that, you need to enable safeboot in windows first to avoid the blue screen issue. Then just change the sata mode to ahci. I also advise disabling secureboot in bios.

Hey @egydiocoelho ,thanks for your reply

The thing is I already have the dual booted system on HDD but wanted to add an SSD. Are the steps which you elaborated for this procedure or for a new ubuntu installation ?

    Thanks !

Most SSDs come with cloning software. If replacing a HDD with a SSD this is the method I use.
