They are all called 204pin DDR3 SmallOutline-DIMMs (SO-Dimms) for laptops. This distinguishes them from the larger 240pin DDR3 DIMMs for desktops.

Shown below is a list of SO-dimm specs which were originally certified to work in the 5733Z model when first introduced. Obviously your Hynix RAM worked too.

I still think there is a possibility that dual channel capability is needed for proper syncing between the two RAM sockets. But it's still a risk to try. So if it was mine, and I could buy from a vendor with a good returns policy like Amazon, I might try a matched 4GB DDR3 1600MHz dual-channel pair.  But it's not mine. So you have to make the final decision on whether to try a matched dual-channel pair, or perhaps move on to a newer machine that can handle Elements 2022. Sorry.

On Amazon, I found this.  The manufacture is Techmyo and the price is £26 (about 33 dollars).  But it's 1333 MHz not 1600 MHz.  How important is the MHz rating?

Actually the 1333MHz is preferred since your mainboard only runs at 1066MHz. It's hard to find new DDR3 less that 1600MHz anymore. The 1600MHz RAM is theoretically supposed to be backward compatible with even 800MHz mainboards but sometimes it's a problem. Just a note that dual-rank is not the same as dual-channel but I think 1333MHz module pair is worth a try.

OK, so I ordered the two matching 4 GB 1333 MHz RAM boards through Amazon and installed one in each of the lower and upper RAM slots.  I powered up and when I got the chance, I pressed F2 to check that BIOS could see 8 GB of memory, which it could.  I then let Windows launch as usual from the hard drive (i.e. not in safe boot mode) and followed the sequence File Explorer -> This PC -> System properties which took me to Device specifications.  The Installed RAM line said 8.00 GB (7.68 GB usable), which I think means that the experiment was a success.  It seems that the problem lay in the fact that the old 4 GB board was incompatible in some way with the 4 GB boards on sale today.  My next step is to try to get the software retailer to re-send me the e-coupon for Adobe Elements 2022.  The previous one dowloaded Elements but it deleted itself when it found that it did not have enough installed RAM.

Can you confirm that after over 50 posts, we appear to have upgraded my ACER?

Sounds good. One last test. Press WIN+R. Enter 'msinfo32' Scroll down the right pane  What do you see for Available Physical Memory? If about 5GB, we can then fairly safely declare it successful.

Immediately after restarting, Available Physical Memory says 6.00 GB.  Total Physical Memory says 7.68 GB, which I assume is the same as the "GB usable" figure which I gave above.  I have received a new token from the software retailer (after all, it didn't cost them anything) and Photoshop Elements 2022 seems to have successfully installed.  Are we there?

This model is an early version of dual-channel RAM that can handle mismatched modules. Their frequencies might be slightly different than the 1600MHz or 1333MHz speeds. A matched pair of 4GB DDR3 SODIMMs is ideal for dual-channel capable mainboards. Please show a phone photo of the BIOS Main tab if possible.

Thanks for all your help Jack.  I think that the hardware side is now sorted.  I have been issued with a new coupon for Elements 2022 and have installed it but it still isn't working properly.  It is therefore possible that I will be active in Adobe Community just as I have been in ACER Community.  Ironic that I have just been promoted to Troubleshooter even though I haven't shot any trouble!  You are worthy of your status of Trailblazer.  Many thanks again.  Morgan.

Sure you have. You've shot at six webpages of trouble. You finally hit the target and at least got 8GB RAM running.  :)

Good luck with the Adobe  community. You may still want to consider LinuxMint as a possible workaround due to other hardware limitations on this older mainboard.

Let us know how the Adobe community works out.
