Predator PO3-630 gave error after BIOS update

Windows update offered me a Asus Firmware update. This rebooted my machine and flashed the BIOS. The system rebooted a few times which is not an issue that's expected but after that on it's return boot it gave an error that the BIOS settings were reset to default and that the CMOS battery maybe dead. This message has not returned and I cycled the machine several times to make sure. The BIOS appears to be working and all low level functionality like fan control is operating just fine. I'm just a tad concerned. Was that due to the checksum failing because the BIOS was now flashed to R01-A4 and didn't match the settings in the CMOS anymore or a sign of a deeper issue?

You never ever update the bios from Microsoft as this bios update is known to cause problems and brick either laptops and/or desktops. These bios's are not Acer approved and you should never ever experiment with none genuine bios updates. You are lucky that your desktop is still working somehow as most consumers who have update from WU their PC's have been bricked. The only solution is to downgrade the bios to the Acer genuine PO3-630 last bios version R01-A4 Fix Hynix BC711 SSD show Error in the SMART detection but be very careful as Acer warns every consumer “Upgrading your system BIOS incorrectly could harm your Acer product. Please proceed with caution”!

I'm sorry but the answer you provided is contradicted with this article from Asus support.

    https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1035492/

OEMs work with Microsoft to provide the correct version of firmware updates found under the other option in Windows update. As I have not experienced any issues since the first message that the settings were reset I'm going to assume this was part of the normal BIOS update and don't require any further support.

You are talking about ASUS firmware and link to ASUS website. Is this a mistake or are some of the Asus and Acer motherboards supposed to be identical?  That would be a surprise to me.

As for BIOS update I only update if it provides more performance, fixes a bug(s) or supports new devices that I use. And even then I do it the old-fashioned way and use USB thumb drive. I've seen too many problems happen to people who do it from the desktop/Windows.

As for Windows Update's offerings, most drivers etc. are under Optional updates. They are suggested in case there is some problem with a particular device. Maybe it is just me, but I'd rather source drivers etc. directly from the manufacturer.

After updating BIOS the message you saw is normal. When updating BIOS all previous information saved on the CMOS/BIOS chip is gone.

Good to hear that your update went well, thou!

The Windows update BIOS images are usually configured with some weird defaults that screw up crucial settings that the manufacturer wants. You can sometimes clear the issues up with a reset to defaults in the BIOS itself. Just assume that if it's offered through WU plan on doing the reset during the reboot...
