I have run into a problem cloning the default WDC PC SN720 SDA 500gb to a new Samsung 1Tb 980 Pro PCIe Gen 4 M.2. I purchased a UGREEN M.2 NVMe Enclosure, USB C External PCIe Drive Caddy, 10Gbps, UASP, 2TB, 3.1 Gen2, Thunderbolt 3, Aluminum Case for M-Key/M+B Key NVME SSD in 2230/2242/2260/2280, Compatible with WD EVO Crucial
I have tried to clone the drives with Samsung Migration Software and it fails and also fails with Acronis Clone and Easeus.
I also currently have a Samsung 970 NVme drive in the second slot as a data drive.
I find it hard to believe I have a faulty SSD so I fugure the usb is the issue. I was planning on doing a stripdown and cleaning fans and repaste also replacing the boot drive at the same time. So if cloning to the usb is acheivable it would be prefered.
Can anyone advise what cable I need or has it got to be on the bus only which will be an arseache.

I have cloned loads of standard 2.5" Samsung SSDs to USB with the Samsung migration software without issue but I am having a problem with this one.

    Hi,
I would suggest you backup the current SN720 to an external HDD, create a bootable USB stick with Macrium reflect free, then replace the SN720 with the Samsung drive, boot with the USB stick and recover the image from the external HDD to the new Samsung drive.

Thanks for you help. I downloaded the program you recommended and ran it in clone mode with my USB (Thunderbolt) drive and it said it has completed ok. This is interesting as Samsung Migration, Acronis Clone and Easeus all threw up errors and failed. So the answer will be when I plug it in and boot.
I have attached the screenshot of the clone results. I have a unallocated partiion because I cloned a small 500gb to a 1Tb . Can you advise what I do to allocate the rest of the unallocated i.e. I pressume I expand a partition to the full amount. Would this program do that or shall I do it in Windows 11 disk management? I have highlighted the partition in the E: drive which I assume I need to extend.
I am slightly confused as to why the original WDC drive has an 8MB unallocated partition at the end. Have you any ideas on this?

I tried to extend the volume to the full amount with it in the USB Thunderbolt but it would not allow me. Any ideas? I have attached the pictures.I pressume as it didn't let me do it I haven't screwed it as a boot drive.

    Hi,
You need to have the Unallocated partition next to E to extend E to the unallocated partition, what I would suggest is, do the cloning by dragging partitions from source drive to the new 1TB drive in this order:
    100MB, 639 MB,1.0GB, E, Unallocated(454.58GB)
You can find the dragging method in this video but you drag the E partition last:

Then you can extend E to the unallocated space using Disk Management.

Macrium Reflect has an option to resize the system partition as part of the clone, and then it will extend automatically. If you leave it as is you will want to use a different partition utility, like the free version of Mini Tool Partition Wizard to move those two trailing partitions to the end of the drive, then you can just extend the system partition.

Yep, I changed it whilst repasting my processors and it works fine. I didn't notice the option. I resized is as per a video by the same guy as above to clone and extend. I.e. I extended it manually with the clone command. I didn't notice it had the option to extend it automatically.
Basically I dragged the partitions over and then extended the data partition to it's maximum less the total mb of the last 2 partitions. I have to say when I rebooted the machine I thought he we go again... :D as it rebooted 3 times. I pressume because the cmos battery was disconnected it had to reconfigure itself.

Possibly, that would account for one of the reboots. Likely resetting the drive ID number so the two drives were recognized as different was another.
