Can I move the graphics card in a nitro 50 to the other PCIe slot?

I want to add a 4-port usb card to my Nitro 50-600 desktop. It has only 2 PCIe slots and the graphics card blocks the second slot. If I move the graphics card to the other PCIe slot, it would allow me to put the usb card in the first slot now used by the graphics card. There is room to do this, but it puts the fan-side of the graphics card much closer to the case. I am concerned about the graphics card overheating.

Sorry no. One is a PCIev3 specifically for graphics cards. The other is PCIev2. Furthermore, fan cannot be too close to case side or GPU overheating might result.  However, you should be able to use either a low profile usb card to clear the fans or use an expensive hub fo expand the number of USB ports. 4, 6 & 8 hubs are available also self-powered if needed.

I tried using a PCI-e PCI Express 36Pin 1X Extender Extension Cable with Gold-Plated Connector to add a usb card, but the computer locked up during the boot. Not sure why it didn’t work.

You probably got what is technically known as a lemon. You could also consider a nice compact USB to USB hub that'd yield a  much  neater & less complicated setup. It even rotates for your convenience. :)
