I purchased a generic card reader yesterday but I only get negative feedback, like there is an error.  I am NOT tech savvy...If there IS a way for me to view my photo on this ACER laptop,
please let me know.  Maybe I have to sell it and get another laptop??  Thank you for your help.

Maybe. Does the stick have a model name and model number? Or what did the stick come out of? A camera?

Yes, it is the memory stick from my Sony Cyber-Shot 2.1.  Also, the SanDisk I use in my SONY don't work either.   ???
They both used to work in old DELL Laptop.

If the sticks haven't been used in a while, they probably have dirty contacts if they don't work in either the reader or the laptop. Try gently rubbing their gold colored contacts with a Q-tip moistened with rubbing alcohol. Then, with the reader or laptop shut off, insert the stick into the card socket. Turn the reader or laptop back on with the stick inserted.

Do you still have the old Dell to test the sticks? If not, do you have a friend with a Windows computer that you can check the sticks on?

The reason is that early camera memory sticks often fail if they've been laying around unused for a long while or a lot of old image files had previously been routinely deleted to make room for new image files.  The fact that the sticks are recognized by neither your new card reader nor the laptop's card reader, suggests stick problems. In fact, can the Sony camera itself still access the image files on both the Sony and SanDisk sticks?

The Acer does not have a card reader...that's my problem.  I just loaded my memory stick into my Sony Cyber-Shot and am able to view all the photos that are stored on it. And they date back to 2013 when I took those pictures. So there's nothing wrong with my memory stick.  When I first started searching for answers in the internet, I read quite a few other issues with ACER laptops, not being able to access photos on memory sticks, or even in card readers..so it seems as if it is not just me who has been having this problem. Since there is NO access to SanDisk in this Acer, and there was on my Dell, I assume that one must have a card reader...but every time I use it, I just get the same negative response.   Are you telling me I am the only person with this Acer Aspire 5 with this problem? I'm ready to sell it and get a used PC just so I can access my photos.

Aye!!! Now I understand your dilemma. You see, some A5s have builtin card readers.  Some don't.  I hadn't realized that you bought an A5 without a builtin  card reader. What generic reader did you get? Name and model?

I suspect you chose the pink one for a reason that has nothing to do with color. :)

If your A5's USB port works OK with a mouse or a USB thumbdrive, you very likely got a RadioShack lemon. Return it as defective for a refund or replacement. If it was mine, I'd go for the refund and get padgett 's Transcend recommendation from Amazon....the pink one.  :)   Ratings seem very high from a very large number of buyers. I've had a lot of Transcend converters through the years for various port standards that never made the big time (like PC card readers). They've always worked as advertised for me.

OK...I'll go back there and see what they say.  I still think I'll just get the same message from my Acer...we'll see....thanks again for all your help!

Like I said, if a mouse or USB thumbdrive works OK in the laptop's USB port, then it's probably not Acer's $400 laptop that's the problem. It's probably RadioShack's $15 SD card reader that's the lemon.

I don't have a mouse with this laptop. When I put in an old thumbdrive that has photos on it, it does work then.  I'm going to Radio Shack tomorrow.

Thought Rat Shack went broke - pulled out of Florida - something still exists. I always preferred Lafayette.
The pink one is 50c cheaper.
ps Transcend handles SDHC/SDXC/microSDHC/SDXC. Older card readers may not handle ones this big.

Another trick if you have an inkjet printer. You might want to check it for a built-in card reader. Most all-in-one Epson, HP & Canon inkjets under $50 have a card reader that can send photo image files directly to the laptop.
