Hi! I have an acer aspire a315-56-356n which suddenly stopped booting normally. When I turn it on, it just shows a black screen. I know the display is turned on because I notice a slight change in brightness, and the blue led on the laptop is on, but it never displays the acer logo or boots to windows. Things I've tried:
1. forced shutdown by holding the power button, didn't work
2. connected to an external display through hdmi, didn't work. key combination to enable/disable the internal display (fn+f5/fn+f6)
3. disconnected battery and cmos battery, didn't work. left the 2 batteries disconnected for about half an hour, but it didn't work
4. I've followed the instructions on posts about the bios recovery procedure, where you download the original bios file from the support page, extract it and put it on a usb drive formatted as fat32. turn the laptop on with the usb drive connected while holding fn+esc. I can hear the fan spinning faster than normal, but nothing else happens, and it just restarts after a few seconds. one thing I've noticed is that in those posts they talk about a file with the .fd extension, but I cannot find that in the original bios file, only abobios.bin, so I tried the procedure described before with that file instead. I've also tried the same thing on different USB ports but nothing happened.
Can somebody help me?
Thanks in advance!

  • Are you sure the bios was updated before the issue occurred? What happens when you reset the battery?

    (1) Do you recall what BIOS version number is on the machine now?
    (2) Has the screen exhibited any stuttering or throttling behavior recently?

I forgot to mention, I've tried resetting the battery, but it didn't work. When the laptop is on, it just turns off. When the laptop is off, it doesn't do anything. I've tried holding the battery reset button for 30 seconds and then turn it on, but it didn't work either

    1) I don't know what bios version the machine has right now
    2) I haven't noticed any unusual behavior on the screen recently. I turned it off normally one day, and the next day it just wouldn't even post.

At this point I'd provably take it apart, remove the battery and hard drive. Check the power supply for 19vdc output. Then see if it will boot to BIOS just on the power supply. The Basic Input Output System is a complete computer in itself and you can write programs for it. Does it BEEP when you try to boot ? Is the a way to tell when the Power On Self Test completes ?

I've taken it apart, disconnected the battery, hdd, ssd, and tried to turn it on with only the power supply connected, but it still did not work: leds on and Black screen. It never beeps, because to make things worse, it has the ram memory soldered on the motherboard, so there's no way to get it to throw that kind of error

No error beeps, no life suggests dead BIOS to me. If it was mine, I'd probably try replacing it with a pre-programmed chip. It's a fairly large 8-pin surface mount that can be replaced with an ordinary pencil tip iron. Google a315-56 & bios chip for vendors who ship to your location.

I'll see what I can find in my country, thanks for the suggestion.
Other than that, would it be impossible to perform an emergency bios recovery with an USB drive on this model?

OK need to know the specific model. What follows "NX.A0TAA." in the part number ?
ps that Bios Chip Store device looks like a SMD.

Yes, possible if an update was tried but failed resulting in the black screen. And even then success rates are less than about 25%. But your chip apparently failed out of the blue with no update attempted. So it's even more unlikely to be recoverable.

  • I think it would be interesting to check, if your laptop is still not under the manufacturer's warranty period.

I can't find anything with that format printed on the case or the motherboard. Googling with the model number I get this NX.HS5EM.00J which somewhat resembles what you mentioned.

According to the purchase receipt, it's under warranty until March, but I wanted to see if I can fix it myself first

Do you know how can I at least try it with the abobios.bin file?

I suggest not fooling with it. You risk voiding the warranty. It's a likely hardware failure, not corrupted firmware.  Immediately arrange for warranty repair by clicking on this link, choosing your country, clicking the support link at the top of the country page and enter your machine's serial number id (SNID)

However, if you want to risk it, you have to fully decompress a BIOS zip file from the ACER download site for your model. You're looking for a decompressed ~17.3MB FH5LIX64.fd file which must be placed in the root directory of an empty FAT32 formatted USB stick with an LED activity like. Plug the charger in, insert the stick, press and hold the FN+ESC keys and turn the laptop on. Don't let go of the keys until you see steady USB LED activity. If successful, the laptop should automatically shut down after about 5 minutes.
