Neither keyboard will work Aspire E 15

Hello all,
I am at my brother’s house because he passed away recently. We are trying to pinpoint perhaps a date of death and I was going to look on his computer to see what I could find.

He has it password protected and I don’t recall that last time I was here but I am looking around to see if I could find anything that might be his password. I did find one I wanted to try but neither keyboard will work. I have restarted the computer, unplugged and plugged back in parts on the laptop and where the wired keyboard is plugged in.

He has an Acer Aspire E 15 laptop and he has an additional monitor and normal size keyboard hooked up, with stereo receiver, speakers and printers also wired into the mix.

My first question should be is there anyway I can get past the screen protected Lock Screen BUT when I tried either keyboard, neither would type the first letter.

The mouse is working, the external keyboard has lights on the keys so it has power and when I touch the laptop, the keyboard lights up. I can maneuver the mouse pointer to where I would enter a password, on both the laptop keyboard and the external one.

I am familiar with sone IT troubleshooting but it’s been several years, BUT I’ve never encountered this, especially with power seeming find to both keyboard.

Any suggestions, on getting the keyboard(s) to work or if there is a way to bypass this Lock Screen, would need appreciated.

Sorry about your loss. Also sorry to inform you that you will have to contact an authorized ACER service center on issues involving security features.

Maybe you can try take out the HDD from this E 15 and put it in a good running PC as a second drive and read from there.

I have a Win 10 Enterprise and Win 10 Home on the same PC, and some drivers could not be installed to the Enterprise version. Ended up booted to the Enterprise version and had it read the drivers from the Home version.

Try your luck and let us know.

Thank you so very much for the reply and information. I will try Acer first and then pull the HD if Acer can’t help. We are still going through paperwork and I’ve found small notebooks with usernames and passwords but realize it wouldn’t likely be labeled as clear as something like Facebook or American Express.

Either of you (or anyone else 🙏) have any thoughts about neither keyboard working. They both are lit, the mouse pointer clicks in the box where you enter the password on both the laptop and the extra monitor, but neither will type a single character. I’ve never come across anything like this from seemingly working keyboards.

If it's touchscreen you might be able to get past it. Toggling FN+F7 might give you more touchpad maneuverability.
